I'm in the minority when it comes to hating this movie, so PLEASE explain to me why its so good. And don't tell me its because Del Toro directed it or because the monsters are amazing. Both are true statements...they just don't necessarily make a good movie. ;)

I haven't seen this movie and haven't really felt the need to. I wasn't into the first one, you know? And any movie that's aggressively marketed like this (for some reason) usually turns out to be a dud.
But I just want to comment that the line "It turns out there was a more cohesive plot in the trailer than the actual film itself" is golden. Pure poetry Death.
Hellboy II
Thanks Buck! You reminded me of an important lesson I had forgotten regarding movie marketing. I totally bought into the marketing for this one. What really weirds me out is the great reviews this movie is getting. I just don't understand.
Hellboy II
Alot of family (of mine) have been complaining about this saying that they think it's supporting the idea of good demons, of course I don't think thats the case at all. It does look like a good movie of the summer but I dont feel like it's as urgent to see as some of the other ones like Dark Knight.
Hellboy II
So HISHE thought this movie was bad, I respectfully disagree. But I have got to admit, the review HISHE gave for this just broke hold of my trust for HISHE's reviews.
Allow me to nitpick your opinion.
1. Movies don't need points, over 65% of all movies don't have them and nor are they required. My god! You gave Transformers 5/5 stars!! And that movie had even less of a point.
2. So you thought it wasn't funny, whereas you found Transformers (Which 90% of it's humor relied on cheap and easy sexual jokes) funny??
3. The horror and situation of the monsters were fine on my part. As far as your reviews go it's all about CGI, action, and humor isn't it?
4. You claim that the trailer had more plot than the movie, from my perspective. It revealed the entire plot in the trailer, and you were simply dissapointed there was nothing more to it. Yet you still give Transformers 5/5 stars, and the plot in that movie was so bland, pointless, and no add-ons either (It's all about, "protect the all-spark!").
5. Did you go to the bathroom in the middle of the movie or something? Cause it's clear that Hellboy and Abe DID put up a fight to prevent the Prince from getting what he wants.
6. As a matter of fact the whole twin bond thing doesn't need to be explained (unless if you need it to be more obvious for you) for two reasons, it was fairly obvious since every time he got hurt she would too, and since Abe mentioned it. So right there that rant is devoured.
7. There is no planned sequel, none that anybody is aware of that is. Since Guillermo Del Toro is working on The Hobbit for a few years. So the point of that is to conclude the two films once and for all.
You gave it 2/5
I would give it 4/5
You can disagree with me all you want, but this is just my educated opinion.
I think this was officially the last time I take HISHE's opinion on a movie. Sorry, but it's clear that you lack good judgement.
Hellboy II
Drama.
I'm sorry you got your feelings hurt Shazam, but you're holding her accountable for things she never even said in her review of the Transformers and that's weird because they're two completely different types of cinema anyway. Why would you hold them under the same light? Apples and bandanas.
Plus, no one gave transformer's 5 stars. That's not just my educated opinion, it's also a fact.

Ok mabye I was a bit wrong about that particular part, but it was highly promoted. Which is what dissapoints me since 60% of the entire movie is all action, the plot was faint, and all the jokes were cheap and simple (I can hardly believe that Yahoo movies put that above Raiders of the Lost Ark!!! I'm not kidding they actually did).
I kinda agree with HISHE review
I don't think I disliked the movie as much as red did, but I think it was dissapointing and could have been way better. My main beef with the movie was that they should have had it be a straight action movie and just left out all the emotional and moral struggles of the different charachters.
Maybe the personal struggles would have been appropriate if the movie had done a better job of selling me on them. I just didn't buy into:
Hellboy wanting to be liked by humans
Fish dude being in love
Princess being in love
Fire chick unsure of her and her babies future
German ghost's authoritative by the book style that he just abandons for no reason towards the later part of the movie
Hellboy and his evil destroy the world destiny
Also; did anyone else kind of side with the albino Evil elf prince? I mean we were supposed to leave nature to those guys and we kind of took over everything and left them with crap.[/

Hi Shazam. I'm sorry I've lost you forever with my review of Hellboy II. I will definitely agree that if you would give it 4 stars, we definitely have a difference of opinion on what makes a good movie. I do need a point...and what I mean by that is I need to care about the story, whether its the allspark, or a crown that rules a golden army, I need to care or I'm not going to enjoy the movie very much. And yes, while I would agree with some of your points on Transformers, it did a much better job of this...for me.
I would also agree with everything Biglazy said and it defends my thoughts that this movie did not succeed in making you care about what your supposed to care about. YES, I did kind of sympathize with the Prince. He really wasn't that scary and his cause did seem rather appropriate. Isn't it kind of a failure that I wasn't afraid of him and really felt like it would be okay if he won?
The Abe and Princess thing was very unbelievable and underdeveloped. And no, I did not go to the restroom, I was referring to the scene where the Prince takes the Princess from the FBI headquarters (and our leading men are wasted), not the scene at the end.
I will say this, I freely admit that I find Hellboy kind of silly to begin with...so in fairness, I did come at the movie with a bias. But don't all reviewers have those?? ;)
Anyway, thanks for sharing Shazam...I certainly don't think I'm the final word on anything and we want this website to be a place were everyone can express varying reviews on all kinds of movies!! I am thankful and hope you are correct about no third movie, although I never believe a series is done just because a director is busy -- I'm pretty sure Selma Blair's schedule is clear (that was mean, I'm sorry). If it makes enough money, there will probably be a third.

Well I can tell we have different opinions, but I respect yours.

For me, the movie was what I expected. How you felt about the first Hellboy will determine the second. For others who havent seen the first one, just consider it action/fanasty lite. That doesn't mean it was bad, it does deliver what it shows, but thats about it.
If there was any missed opportuinty it was the story. The story could have been taken deeper in many directions: Abe's love, the conflict with nature, being hated for being different, ready for fatherhood, Armagendon, personal growth...but they were all just touched on without any real depth to any of them. There were a lot of classic fanasty cliches used here that really could have gotten their own Hellboy twist, but alas no. The clear lack of concern for the human agents was just really dumb coupled with the fact that the human agents carry just hand guns when they know they are going after the supernatural.
I needed more to recommened this movie for adults, but I think teens will have a Hell of a time.

I have to agree with most of you that a large problem with the movie is how unfocused the story is. It's my biggest gripe. But to be honest, it's almost my only gripe.
I found the jokes to be funny, and so did everyone else who laughed along. I felt that Hellboy was the only character that could pull off such a large quantity of humor, and that's exactly what happened. That's who Hellboy is as a character. I would have been dissapointed if he was more serious.
I loved that not only was Hellboy tempted to sympathise with the Prince, but so was the audience. But that's where it fell apart for me in terms of focus. Had the main dillema of the movie been whether Hellboy would side with Prince Nuada or not, the story would not have felt so jumbled; moreover, your sympathy for Nuada (instead of fear of him) would not have felt out of place. All of the other characters' smaller storylines that were touched upon but not fully explored, would have benefited from being closer tied to the plot. The movie would have been the same without Krauss, for example.
The action was great. The lines were funny. Hellboy as a character made sense. The story was character driven. All the characters were likeable (sadly though, even Nuada). They managed to keep the movie from feeling like a big budget eye candy summer flick. The acting was superb all around. The monsters were beautiful. The backdrops and sets were fantastic (except for that one scene in Ireland). Had the plot/script been tightened and trimmed to a sharper edge, everything else would have fallen into place.
The movie had a big problem: everything was everywhere. But, to me, the good was enough to make up for it. It wasn't Pan's Labrynth or The Devil's Backbone (though to be honest, it would have been wrong for me to expect such), but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to anyone who likes action or superhero movies.

Ok, I think I can tell where a portion of the critism is coming from. I can tell alot of people hated this movie mostly because it was far too different from the first. Now that i've seen the first I can tell that many were dissapointed by the enourmous difference, it wasn't as funny (Hellboy's zippy one-liners in Hellboy 2 weren't as good as the first), The mood was brighter than the first (I think the end of the world needs to be darkened, which this film missed), the action wasn't the same (The battle between Sammeul and Hellboy was priceless, and no other battle in the Hellboy franchise could beat it), and it lacked a point in the end (Hellboy 1 had the whole what makes you human point). So I can tell that much of this critism is out of dissapointment, which is understandable, as I do agree.
My rating has changed on this film from 4/5 to 3/5.
Hellboy II
Actually, as unfocused as it was, I liked the second one better then the first.
The first was way too dark and bloody for such a comicbook look and one-liners feel.
You can't have it both ways or twenty ways like they constantly try to have during the movies.
Also, not mentioned is the wooden look of Hellboy as a kid, awful.

Tina, nice rewrite of Hellboy II at The Editing Room.
I particularly liked how you wove the plot holes into the dialogue. And the sarcasm... drippingly funny. "It's just embarrassing" - I could see Selma saying that! And "Needer Nooder Neffer Cohen..." made me burst out laughing.
And hey - I thought you were famous before, but now you're... famouser. ;)

Thanks Jake! ;)
It was fun... and stressful. The guy who writes over there hasn't had a guest writer in 8 years and he has a pretty fierce following. I'm really glad I did it though, I haven't pushed myself in a while.
Oh, and my favorite line was the "needer nooder" stuff too. I actually giggled everytime I watched that part in the movie...he sounded so ridiculous!!
