There's a trailer on the official site:

http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com/

This may seem obvious to (hopefully) most of you, but anyone who hasn't read the Watchmen needs to... better to read it before the movie comes.

It looks like the movie'll be 2 hrs & 25 mins. I can't imaine how much they can capture in that short amount of time... odds are the whole pirate thing'll have to be cut, yeah? But, you know, as long as we get plenty of time with Rorschach I'm in.

Anyway... predictions? Interested? Scared?

I just got back from it.
That is quite a movie to take in all at once!
I'm a little stunned.

It's almost 3 hours long, but easily could have been much longer. I kind of wish i hadn't read the graphic novel prior to seeing the movie. The twist and turns probably would have been more exciting had I not already known they were comming. Without giving it away, I must say that I love the new ending as opposed to what was in the novel/comic. Another nice touch was the brief omage (i can't spell) to the outer limits for their semi inspiration wiht "The architects of fear".

Also, since they change part of the ending, did they really need that tiger thing? It made no sense to people who hadn't read the book.

my brother would be the person id ask about it but he said he doesnt want to see it in theaters because of the "stuff" in it

I got back from it a few hours ago...
I really really like this movie, you may think i'm even over my head for saying this, but.. I liked it better than The Dark Knight.
I'm also really glad for the small easy to overlook comic relife.

Rorschach was awesome enough to say that they did him justice.
I'm still surprised Comedian could put up such a fight.

Oh yeah, and I went to go see this with my grandmother.

Daniel's picture

bliss, I'm interested in hearing why you thought the story was so much better than dark knight. Because, after thinking on the film more, I wonder if people who love the movie are those who are fans of the original book or did you go in blind?

I'm kind of half and half on this movie. I thought it was REALLY well done given what I have seen in comparison to the book, but there were lots of parts I felt didn't need to be expanded on as a whole.

To me, Rorschach is the driving force of the movie. Every time the story drifts too far away from his storyline it got boring. I understand all the pieces fit together, but i still wanted to watch the detective solve the mystery more than watch the couple slowly fall for each other. but that's just me. I would have been happy with Rorschach "the movie"

Bliss's picture

The Dark Knight and Watchmen have two very different stories. Sure, they are both very good, but Watchmen has more story to it. You get to see each heroes perspective on life, and there morals. By the end of the movie I figured Rorschach was defiantly the most violent of them, but he had more moral guidelines that he followed. Like you said Cap, it's alot to take in at once. After thinking about it, You don't really have a whole lot of emotional attachment to Batman by the end of Dark Knight. I didn't go into this blind though, I read it about a month ago.

SPOILER!

I wouldn't say Watchmen was SO much better than Dark Knight, but even though I knew Rorschach was going to die, I was just really wishing he wouldn't. Perhaps, it's the fact that since the movie points out really how imperfect the watchmen are, we can all relate to it better.

The more I think about it, the more I like this movie. I really think Snyder did a pretty amazing job of handling everything. I don't know how anyone could have done it better.

Were there flaws?? yeah, but if you want to see the true brilliance, buy the book. This story is really deep and frighteningly true and totally amazing. It's also dark and horrible and everything about humanity that we hate. But it's very real in a very surreal sort of way. Can you tell I love it? :) I too (like Simplecap) would love to hear more from people who didn't read it. Does it make sense? Is it good if you don't know the story in advance?

Biglazy, thank you for speaking out about the ending. I absolutely agree. I bet if Alan Moore were truly honest he would say that this is the ending he should have thought about. It fits perfectly with the story and ties things up beautifully.

CTALONS's picture

Tina, you tottaly picked my brain here, but let me ask it again.

As far as enjoyment, should I read the comic first or see the movie first?
If I read first, then no suprises for the movie...but if I see it first then I might not understand the story....Which way brings the most enjoyment?

Now that I've had a weekend to reflect on the movie, I'm starting to like it more and more. I think that is because i really liked the graphic novel, but i don't think i would ever take the time necessary to read it again, but with the movie you basically have that option. I would alos love to see some prequals revolving around those old school super heroes you see during the opening credits. (not a full movie but maybe a short webisode thing or animated dvd...etc)

Anyways, here's what I wanted to say. Did anyone else find the violence to be a little inconsistant, or at least the graphicness of said violenceto be inconsistant? Like when Night Owl and Jupiter were fighting in both the gang fight and the prison fight, it was pretty basic punch kick fighting where it looks like the heroes are just knocking people the F out. But the Night Owl during the Gang fight breaks the one bad guys arm, sending the bone ripping through the skin of the arm. It just seemed like they interchanged between regular comic book movie violence (Rorchac fighting the police or him messing up people's hands) and 300/sin city violence (Rorchac haking that guys skull and prison guy cuttnig off fatties arms).

Tina's picture

CTALONS: I had read the first half of the graphic novel when I saw the movie. I personally say read it first...but that's because there's something really neat about seeing a graphic novel put on screen. Its different than other novels because you already had a visual when you read it. So to see that visual come even more to life is exciting. The way Zack Snyder does things, its as if you got a copy of the story boards before the movie and its so awesome to see those scenes play out. Normally I wouldn't recommend reading a normal novel before seeing the movie, but graphic novels are different.

What do ya'll think? Should he read it first or go in blind??

Biglazy: SPOILER
Yeah, I thought the graphic violence was a little much and out of place at times, but I think they did that to intentionally shock you. The novel is pretty bloody too, but they add to it in the movie and I'm not sure that was necessary. For instance, in the book Rorschach kills the kidnapper by burning his house down with him in it. Horrible, yeah, but not quite as graphic as watching him cleaver his head several times. I don't know...I think it definitely earned its R rating!!

Bliss's picture

Actually, I'm sort of surprised it didn't earn a NC-17...
However, CTALONS, you defiantly want to read it first, because there is so many awesome things that will only make you more ready to see it.
If you go in blind it will feel like you're in a sequel and didn't see the first.

I was wondering the same thing, but Bliss pretty much just answered that question for me.

On another note, I'm wondering just how graphic the movie is. I'm 17 but a friend of mine who's 14 really wants to see it and wants me to take him, would it be too mature for him?

Bliss's picture

Hey, I'm working with paint here, so what can I say?
I figured this could happen eventually, but not during the Zombie Comic!

Daniel's picture

oh man! you beat me to the joke :)

Yeah i would say totally read it first, or at least read part of it so you will know what you're about to get into. There are lots of details left out in the movie, such as Rorschach's mask, they totally skip over that info.

As for too graphic. I'd say be ready for male and female nudity. mostly male. lots of blue nakedness. the rest is violence. when Dr. Manhattan blows someone up, it's never an easy clean up. More like a water balloon of guts.

If you can, or want to take someone to that sort of show, that's up to you.

You should go ahead and make it, mine obviously wasn't that great, and you could do something way funnier with it. :P

Loved Tina's review... only one correction... it takes place in 85 not 86...

I hate to be a stickler... :D

isaac5's picture

i wish it wasn't rated R

how can you incorporate pirates into a superhero movie

well anyways i really want to see it but it will be very rough to convince my parents considering these variables

1) it took MONTHS for my parents to let me watch the dark knight

2) it is rated R and i can only watch R rated movies with my parents and how will i get my parents to watch an R rated superhero movie if my 19 year old brother still cant get them to watch lotr

3)nudity/sex

4)i dont have anyone on my side who will fight with me example
-with the dark knight my 14 year old brother wasnt able to watch it either and i had him on my side BUT he went to a party where he saw it with permission (seniority rules) THEN at Christmas time my 21 year old brother (who was always rebelious) got me the dark knight for christmas (and he got me the special double pack too)- so my 14 year old brother isnt into superhero movies and sci-fi action stuff as much as me and my 19 year old brother so my 14 year old brother wouldnt be campaigning to let us watch it as he did for the dark knight which he wanted to see because so many people his age liked it and nobody his age went (or will go to) see watchmen and he just doesnt seem to interested in seeing it so no matter what he wont campaign for us to watch it and neither will my 19 year old brother becuase he will say "well mom and dad said no so they said no"

so my prediction on when i'll see it:

i will see a stripped down censored version of it ( probably monitered by my 19 year old brother) when i am 15-16 and will not see the uncut version until i choose what i watch without parental consent

so i wont see it for a very very long time

Tina's picture

Oh man, Ghostmx, I don't know WHY I wrote 1986. Weird. Thanks for pointing that out...we'll correct it. :)

And Isaac, I remember when I wasn't allowed to see PG-13 until I was 13. It was awful, but I can understand why my dad was so adamant about it. And this movie is rated R. There's plenty in Watchmen that is very inappropriate, and truthfully, you will enjoy it a LOT more in five years anyway, I guarantee it.

Funny Bliss!

And I can't wait to hear what you all think when you read it!! I couldn't put it down. ;)

isaac5's picture

yeah i would probably pay more attention in 5 years

PG -13 gadzooks

DanzNewz's picture

I have seen the movie twice now... I enjoyed it a bit more the second time... now that I wasn't worried if it was going to be good or not... top notch movie... 4.5/5

As for people worried that you have to read the novel to make sense of any of it... it's fine... I went with my brother last night and he understood it and enjoyed it...

I actually framed my movie ticket.

I had return the high five otherwise you would be left endlessly hanging.
I've had some nice frames that are real small, that had gone to no use, so last night I put the movie ticket in there, and now it's by my bed, along with a pictue of my cat. but enough personal stuff, check out the new Marvel vs DC with Rorschach: Hilarious!

Theres just some minor language though.

CTALONS's picture

I had not read the book, so I can't speak to that angle, but overall a great film with minor flaws at best.
I figured out the plot half way through, which suprised me since everyone was talking like it was this deep mystery.
A second viewing would probably make me like it even more. Looking forward to the DVD.
I didn't need the happy ending though, I thought it took away form the final reveal.
I give it: :D :D :D :D

What if Watchman was a Saturday morning cartoon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDDHHrt6l4w

that saturday morning watchman could totally be a saturday morning cartoon..only if rorschach was more darker and they didn't mess up his voice, reminds me of the old tv show teenage mutant hero turtles :)

There's the beauty! The ticket it a little hard to see though.

Now Bliss... I don't want to alarm you... or insinuate that you may have been involved in any sort of foul play... but, I believe you stole my ticket!!!!

SPOILER

I'm glad that Nite owl witnessed Rorschachs death, it just seemed more real. It was more of a relife than knowing that while Rorschach was getting combusted, Nite owl and Silk Specre were...you know...

Tina's picture

I agree...and was surprised, but pleased, that the movie changed that part as well Bliss.
