If you didn't see the movie in theaters or you didn't rent it you must check this one out. This was my movie of the year for 2006. Plus it's got Natalie Portman in it :) and she must be any star wars fan's dream girl.

V for Vendetta
I just want to start off by sayin V for Vendetta was a really good movie, but the people back home are idiots!
I watch independent movies, a lot, I love em I feel they make you think and are a nice break from the bang boom crash that mainsteam flicks give ya, don't get me wrong I love movies and I love them all no matter what their popularity is... but I was teased up the wazoo for watching independent flicks.
Kids were telling me that I can't watch V for vendetta cause it was an intelligent movie and I wouldn't understand! That made me MAAADD!!! So out of anger I went and saw it with my best friend. And guess what?
ANY ONE COULD UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS GOING ON!!!! AHHH!!!!
-Clears throat- Sorry for the rant..... V For Vendetta.... awesome flick, woot!
V for Vendetta
people thought you wouldn't understand V because you watch indie films??? how deep do they think this movie was?
to be honest, i hated every second of V for Vendetta. sorry Kweejibo. I don't really enjoy angry politically fuelled movies. At least not ones that are completely obvious. But hidden message aside, i didn't think the movie was very good anyway.
sorry to be a buzz kill. but if you like it, hey, more power to you. 8)
V for Vendetta
I agree. I hate movies that have a "veiled" political message. When I sit down to watch a movie, it should be a little escape from all the crap that's going on around me. And besides, I don't care about these people's political agendas, so it especially annoys me when they try to force feed you their ideas by lacing entertainment with it.
V for Vendetta
I am in love with Natalie Portman though :) She's wicked fine! She should come live with me... Yes... Natalie Portman should move into my place... immediately.
I expect to see things put in motion to make this possible right way. :D

Also I love V for Vendetta as a movie, but again hate the allegory side of it.... which is most of it. The original comic had much less of an agenda and felt much more like an intelligent political debate between the relative merits of dictatorship and anarchy. It wasn't a "Good vs. Evil" story at all and V wasn't exactly a "hero" but I still thought the movie was enjoyable. To me the saving grace of the movie was the detective played by Stephen Rea. He lended a much needed "real" character to a film of caricatures. I honestly could care less what happens to V in this movie, I just couldn't relate to him even though I usually love heroes with a tragic past, but I really cared about Finch the detective's journey and development.
V for Vendetta
This should go into the special abilities topic but I am able to ignore a hidden message in a movie while I watch it. I understand what people mean when they say that V for Vendetta has a hidden political message but I like to watch movies for what they are. I don't care what message the producers are trying to send me I just wanna watch a movie! That's why I loved V for Vendetta. That and the explosions were AWESOME! I think I became even more of a pyro after watching that
V for Vendetta
I have to strongly disagree with you guys on the "veiled" message of V for Vendetta. I know everyone is taking this movie to be an attack on Bush and his recent Patriot act which has restricted freedoms, but for such a well read group of people in this genre you guys have really dropped the ball.
When Star Wars 2: Attack of the Clones came out, all you heard on TV was that this was George Lucas taking a political stand on cloning. And while the newsmen hunted around in the dark for the best angle to support their rhetoric, every Star Wars fan laughed their head off. The Clone Wars was a storyline that mentioned in the orginal Star Wars movie back in 1977 and in order to do a prequel that war had to come up since it was so pivotal.
The first episodes of V for Vendetta were originally published in black-and-white between 1982 and 1985. The first movie draft for this work was done in the 1990's long before Bush came to power. So what V for Vendetta is speaking about could not possibly be about Bush.
Of course, for those who feel that there freedom is limited they can look at this movie and make connections. Yet, to deny the book or movies genuis is to really go against everything we all claim to love on here.
V for Vendetta
Let me restate that I don't ever look for political tie-ins to movies. I couldn't give a damn what they director thinks about today's society. I just want to watch a good movie. I do respect your point though that V for Vendetta was made long before the Bush Administration. Also i don't think this topic should become a political debate if that is where this is headed. I just wanted to talk about a movie.
V for Vendetta
.... There was a political message? -thinks and reviews movie in head- Hmmm.... -Gasp!!- THERE WAS A POLITICAL MESSAGE!!!!
Ah well V had cool fighting.... fireworks..... stuff.

Yes Cap. Sad isn't it? Ah well I showed them by walking in the next day screaming to my friend, "Hey Kait!! V for Vendetta was awesome I really loved the explosion scene a the end!"
I didn't care if I ruined it for others or not but it shut all the right people up. Hehehehe. Me = Evil
V for Vendetta
I agree, Natalie Portman should come live with cap. Basically, well, because that would mean that she lived with me also. Me and Natalie can hang out, listen to the shins, shave our heads togehter. Oh wait, I didn't like the shaved headed Portman.....
V for Vendetta
me does not mean we :) i will not share
V for Vendetta
You will not have a choice my friend. Just wait until i'm sitting around the house with nothing to do. . . . oh wait, i will have plenty to do with Natalie around. "Natalie, would you like to help me take kiddo for a walk?" "Natalie, would you like to go to the pool?" "Natalie, would you like to spend the weekend in Barbado's" AND I'M IN!!!!!!!!
V for Vendetta
This movie disappointed me too. CTALONS, I know what you are saying and I do know it was written long before Bush. It's true a lot of people make that mistake. I think regardless though, people saw similarities that made the film seem tiring...but yeah, that is just a coincidence.
I have a feeling I would not necessarily enjoy the comic book either. I had problems with the entire ideals of the movie. I saw V as a terrorist...given our current world climate I had trouble suspending disbelief and getting excited about anarchy. The film seemed to hide some pretty frightening ideas behind a glossy comic book world. Like when ?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ?V?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ? says, ?¢‚Ǩ?°?É‚Äû?ɬ?blowing up a building can change the world." Very true statement...as we've seen...but not exactly something that made me excited.
I know I'm debbie downer :)
It was a beautiful looking movie, with great acting, I just didn't like the story. I do plan to see it again though...just to see if I enjoy it more without all the hype (I was WAY too excited about this movie, which I think led to it being a MUCH bigger let down for me).
V for Vendetta
OH and seriously guys, Portman is not going to come live with you!

dat girl is whack! We are so broken up.
have a blast Ctalons
:D
she'll come crawlin back though... they always do. he he
WHAT?!
V for Vendetta
Besides that fact that she is crazy, Portman can't come live with us because we don't have room for her with all the other beautiful women that are constantly over. I mean, this morning i tripped over gwyn stephanie and jessica simpson on the way out of the door. They didn't even have the common courtesy to cook me breakfast!
V for Vendetta
I thought Gwen Steffani was taken... Hmm. Dang!!! I didn't know Natalie Portman could even act like that!!?? She pretty good at rappin'. I can see hoe everyone would want to hang out with Gwen Steffani and Natalie Portman.... but why Jessica SImpson!?!?!!
Me I'll chill here with.... aww everyone's back home.... and not in Japan....
-lowers head- I miss my Peachcake (Best band ever!)
V for Vendetta
I'm confused - hidden messages? What hidden messages? (Apologies to Kweejibo here, the following contains political history - you may want to stop reading here)
The original book was written in a time of upheaval as Margaret Thatcher turned Britain from the poorest country in Europe to one of the richest. She did this by beefing up the police force and then shitting on a lot of people. This made a lot of people unhappy. Britain was not far from being a police state as demonstrations were repeatedly put down by the riot police. The book was directly influenced by and directly commenting on this political climate.
Cut to 20 years later. Tony Blair turns into Thatcher and stops listening and starts doing some very undemocratic things in response to an act of terrorism. Seems an appropriate time to dust of the V script putting two decades of progress in to bring it up to date. They all but name Blair in it, the only thing they needed to mention to remove all doubt was Cliff Richard. They explicitly say in the film that a government should be scared of it's people and listen to them, not the other way round - otherwise drastic action is needed. Not exactly veiled.
Which takes me to point of V being a terrorist. Doesn't that depend on on who's side you stand? I admit the bit about blowing up a building to change the world was a bit close to the mark... but as pointed out by CTALONS, the book was written years before that event and involved a much higher building count.
As for not wanting to watch films with political content... Why watch an Alan Moore based film? Everything he writes is an attack on Thatcher! He even managed to turn Marvel's Captain Britain superhero comic into a political critique! David Lloyd, who co-created V, said it was a book for people who don't switch off the news.
Whoops. Sorry went on a bit there. As I don't have a dog, Natalie could stay... but she have to keep doing the English accent and I'd have to kick out Jennifer Connelly......
V for Vendetta
Telling by your previous post it seems pretty obvious to assume that you are British. And to call the messages in V for Vendetta hidden is a bit of a stretch they are pretty blatant. But as an American I associated V for Vendetta with the Bush administration and the War in Iraq. I didn't know any of the history of the book but the movie seemed pretty closely related to that issue. That's where I am coming from.
V for Vendetta
Yeah, guilty. Sorry, I didn't mean to go on so there.
I enjoyed the book, even though it is a bit dated now, and I thought they improved upon the story in the film. I like the fact that V isn't really a person, but an idea. I thought it was a well timed cautionary tale, much in the tradition of Metropolis, 1984, Fahrenheit 451 & Armageddon.
It's funny how what you take out of a film is influenced by what you take in. The leader struck me as being Blair because he was described as deeply religious, which is what made Blair stand out from his predecessors. Whereas, I got the impression that all US Presidents HAD to be deeply religious to get the job.
Maybe it's my familiarity with Moore's books, but for someone to complain a film based on his work is political, is like complaining that the camera spends too much time moving in a Michael Bay film.
V for Vendetta
I laughed to myself when you said that all American Presidents HAD to be religious to get the job. Which is somewhat true. In a country where the majority of the voters (which is sadly not the majority of the people) are Christian will vote for a Christian candidate because it says that the candidate has good values. So even though there is a separation between church and state religion has SO much to do with politics. Another point that relates V for Vendetta to the Bush administration is the conspiracy about Three Waters and St. Mary's epidemic in the movie. So many people believe that St. Mary's was planned by the government to gain power. Similarly many people believe that 9/11 was a conspiracy planned by the Bush Administration to make an excuse to start the war in Iraq. Personally I'd like to think that my government didn't deliberately kill several thousand people just to start a war that would kill another several thousand people. Call me crazy if you like.
V for Vendetta
Sadly voting isn't about character or ability, it's about branding a canidate to fit the largest amount of voters. And voters in turn vote base upon bullet points instead of real understanding. There has to be a better way, but since the people in charge got there through the old way, it is highly doubtful that they would want that way to change.
We know for a fact that throughout history going way back to ancient Greece that politicans have lied to bring his people into war. Now, allowing ones own people is harder to prove but possible.
Take for example Pearl Harbor, if you look at all the strange things that happen prior to the attack plus the resistence of Americans to get into the war...you just might think that it was allowed to happen. I pray to God that none of these things are true, but sadly you will never know.
V for Vendetta
So the whole if we just stopped voting they will all go away won't work huh?
I often wonder about government conspiracys... Like Area 51... it's real... it exsits... -Banging is heard from the door-
Crap!... hold on guys... -Babbzilla goes to answer the door and on the other side is a small group of men dressed in black.-
HEY!! LET GO!! WHAT ARE YOU... WE'RE IN THE SAME BOAT!!! LET GO OF ME!!! AHHH!! -The men in black take Babbzilla off screen. More banging and thudding is heard-
..... Whew... -Babbzilla returns, only slightly dishoveled- Sorry bout that guys... these idiots forget who they keep messin with... I mean... ((damn!)) Nothing to see here!
(((Sorry all I'm bored...)))
V for Vendetta
Sadly not Babbzilla.
Our current leader, in a stroke of evil mastermind genius, actually elected himself to the top job, taking the democratic burden from his party and the man in the street.
How very public spirited of him!

The more I look at history, the more appreciation I have for modern Republics and Democracies. As completely and utterly goat-f****ed as our political system is (and it is, oh boy it is) it is still leaps and bounds better than practically anything in history. Trying to balance power between the ignorant cattle that is the public, the money grubbing private elite, the narcissistic egomaniacs who'd sell their souls for political power, and the non-elected judicial system, it's the most insanely delicate juggling act in the history of human events.
It's just like the old axiom that the only thing worse than a free press is a controlled press, ditto for governments. The only things more screwed up than a Democratic-Republic are all the historical alternatives.
BTW, Natalie is way more fun off her meds, I just steer her clear of babies and small animals, and I never let her meet the other members of my Harem (Jennifer Connelly, Kiera Knightly, Paz Vega, and the rest)
V for Vendetta
So anyway.
In V, did anyone appreciate the underlying metaphor of the existential juxtaposition of Anarchy as both destroyer and creator and it's relevance in both the physical and abstract sense and thus revealing V's humanity?
V for Vendetta
I feel that the people's vote doesn't have enough influence on who gets elected. The electoral College is who really chooses the new president. But they are supposed to vote based on what the majority of the people in their state want. In the case of president Bush's election he won the presidency but not the popular vote so therefore the Electoral college elected him because he was a standing war time president not because a majority of people wanted him to be president. Look at every president who was in office during a war and you'll see that if the war lasted more than that president's term he was reelected. Look at FDR he was president for 16 years. The only exception was probably the Vietnam presidents.
V for Vendetta
The founding fathers actually intended it that way Kweejibo, they (rightly) feared a true democracy. Think about it, think about the people you see on Jerry Springer, COPS, who do you think pays for Professional Wrestling (I know grown adults who STILL argue with me that it's 100% genuine), who watches daytime soap operas? A democracy in the truest sense of the word turns into mob rule, and the mob doesn't have a clue what it really takes to run the country. I don't have a freakin clue what it really takes, and I'm in the upper third of the population intellect and income-wise.
On the other hand, they also didn't want the power solely in the hands of the land-owning elite few. That leads to just as much injustice and abuse as a true democracy or monarchy. It's all about a balance of power, and it's more delicate than you think. Like I said it's screwed up beyond all belief, but it's still the best system out there.
Bush was elected by the system established at the founding of the country, and also has run the most efficient war in history. (That's not opinion that's verifiable fact) He's made his mistakes, but the War in Iraq wasn't one of them, his main mistake was not being able to speak like Winston Churchill to let the public know the true necessity of the war.
I should stop. This isn't the right forum for political debate, and nothing will really get solved here anyway. Summing up, Politicians suck, Vendetta was a cool movie, Natalie Portman is the hottest psych patient I've ever seen, and we should all just destroy our governments and return to anarchy =)
P.S. James you crazy English Ninny, you know full well Americans can't read any words with more than four syllables!
V for Vendetta
I hate this movie, I'm not sure how tell it in english but I'll try.At the end of the movie I was with my best friend, who is kinda stupid, and he was saying V is so cool is my hero(dramatisation) ! And I think to myself, what the hell? V is just a terrorist and a murderer, some poeple might find that if you'r fighting in the "good side" it's okay you can do whatever you want, but I don't !
