Rock Band, it totally rules.

I would say something like Pong.. but that isn't still played today (except for ironically).. but Tetris.. that really stands the test of time. People still play tetris today and for a while it was considered more addictive than crack.

Tetris is scientificly proven to be the most relaxing game ever! Not the way I play it!

Old fashion, I wouldn't have a clue 'cause I wasn't around in that era (:P), but today, I must say either Half-Life 2 or Counter-Strike: Source. Two of the best games I've ever played.

Deafboi13's picture

i can describe the best one with little said. Wakka Wakka Wakka.

FF7 for the RPG
NHL 95 for the sports game (last time I could took the Nordiques and beat the Canadiens  )
Prince of Persia 1 for the adventure "
MarioKart 64 for the race "

MMORG: Star Wars Galaxies is the only one i've played.

Throwbacks are always the best, but for me, (just my opinion) The Devil May Cry Series! Come on, what other game grades u on how stylish you kick arse?!   "I'm like the wind baby...you can't see me!"

Halo series...

or

But if I had to go back a few years I will go with Super Mario Brothers on the original Nintendo in 1986!!

Can someone explain what makes so much better then other shooters?
For example, is it better then Half-Life 2?

Daniel's picture

for me what makes a great shooter is the interaction of the story with the gamer. Not just run and gun, but REAL Story. If you don't care about the cast or the objective, then game is easily forgettable. Halo, i feel, is perfect example of an easily forgettable run and gun story that doesn't require you to pay attention to anything except where is the way point you need to reach so they can give you the next waypoint. All you have to do is kill everything in your path, don't fall down a cliff, continue to your waypoint, and it will be followed by a cut scene.

Games like Half-Life have waypoints, but the story is happening while you play and the waypoints are actual objectives. There are puzzles, challenges, and boss levels that make you appreciate victory, where as Halo can only offer a Scarub to defeat at the end of a level. Or something else equally as easy to defeat. This is because of the 2 gun 3 grenades limit, I believe, in halo. You can't ever stock up on weapons and ammo because it wont allow you to carry more than 2. Both with an limit on bullets it can carry. This means you could get stuck in a situation where you aren't really prepared to fight back, so how do they fix that? no boss levels and we'll lay weapons out everywhere for you to use. Easy Mindless just shoot everything gaming.

Halo is only loved for it's multiplayer. anyone who defends the story is fighting just to fight. They know the halo saga didn't blow their socks off with some genius plot. When it comes to originality, thought provoking, challenges, and maximum options ability, Halo can't even compete. It's just fun multiplayer. Which is why people play it forever and say it rules.

back to topic:
my favorite FPS was Team Fortress (which was a Half-Life side game of capture the flag) and paved the way for what i look for in Online FPS games today.

First, you could check the buh-geebus out of people in that game, and you could fight, and break the plexi-glass, and there was blood on the ice (they might have taken that out in '95, not sure). And Ray Bourke was the absolute man in that game. . . . .

ViraZ's picture

RPG's: Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy Tactics

FPS: Call of Duty 4, (for online) Batllefield 1942

Platform: Sly Cooper 2, Super Mario Galaxy, Ratchet & Clank (any of them)

Sports: NBA Jam/Hangtime/Showtime series

Fighting: Capcom vs. SNK

RTS: Command & Conquer series

Racing: Mario Kart DS

Misc. : Starfox 64, Guitar Hero series

If you see any of these in a bargain bin and don't buy these , you are a communist ..... or just broke ..... or don't have the console to play them.

Mario.

command and conquer

movieman101's picture

You are so right.Mario seems so ahead of it's time.As forC&C, best games ever!!

linkedtoxbox's picture

Fable was ok, but i think that Mass Effect has it all over Fable.

Fable 2 looks great, aslong as they can deliver on the promises.

lets hope its fallout 3 :D

Oh man... that takes me back... my brother would always yell at me when we'd play NHL '95... because all I would do is hit 'B' constantly... and when my guy would get the puck... he'd hit it at the goal automatically... and it would go in a lot of the time... either that... or I'd get called on icing... :D

In my opinion:

Galaga

super mario 64, it has the coolest opening title EVER! I'm still trying to get those pesky 120 stars.

i'd say SC. has to be the best rts game of all time, and yeah it would excel halo 3 anyway.

for the PC, WoW i guess. not just because it already is the number one online PC game and it has millions of players, but it also has excellent performance, gameplay, storyline, races, characters, not to mention the best costumer service in the world.

You can't really say it has excellent performance (or maybe you mean graphics) because that mostly depends on your computer, and saying it has the best customer doesn't mean that much because, besides online games, you really shouldn't need customer service.
