While I don't think this film is perfect, I do think it is worth every penny of your movie ticket. I give it 4 out of 5. FULL REVIEW
Comments:
The Score
I forgot to mention the score for the film in my review. Not surprisingly, it's by James Horner, and I thought as usual he did an outstanding job. With a movie so rich in visuals, you would think it would be difficult for the music to stand out, but for me it did. Really excellent!
I've still been meaning to
I've still been meaning to see it, but I agree about the cliche thing. The trailers only show this really epic battle, but after great movies like Star Wars and Lotr what else is there to have such an amazing fight over, that isn't going to be unoriginal.
This is not the end
Wow. I watched this with only two dimensions (because I picked the wrong showing). Two things I noticed. Firstly, you could tell which were the "We are filming this in 3D" scenes. Secondly, even though I missed a third, it was still visually stunning. I loved the seemlessness of the special effects.
I think what made the film so visually stunning was the attention to detail & you certainly got the impression that there was a lot more behind the film and to Pandora that was on display. This leads me to think that we will be revisiting Pandora again n the near future. It looked prime for a tv show, but the production costs would probably still be too high, so I'll go with a prequel film. To invest so much in creating the technology & developing Pandora to such a level of detail without exploring it more would be such a waste.
I'll probably revisit Avatar in 3D to see the battle scene.

Saw it opening night
First off, I saw this in 3d, and had no idea that 3d technology had come so far. Last thing I remember looking at in 3d was probably the red and blue glasses and the sports illustrated 3d issue. The visuals were amazing, and I can't say that enough, but as it will be said many times, you knew basically the entire plot before you even went into the theater or bought the ticket. The foreshadowing was very heavy handed and left no surprises. That's not as bad as it sounds though since a lesser director or producer could easily have made the obvious plot points and foreshadowing into big negatives that got in the way of the visual masterpiece that it was. Instead you just kind of felt ahead of the curve (kind of like how apparently everyone except for me knew Bruce Willis was dead the whole time in the 6th sense). I did kind of get mad that more of the mercenaries (cause I think it's important to note that they weren't active military) didn't fight with the aliens once they found out they were .... let's face it, they were giant blue Native Americans. Maybe it could have been a better story if they had at first made the natives (unfairly) seem like vicious savages instead of initially showing them as being people completely in tune with nature. Give more of the charachters and internal struggle with morals and loyalty, instead of just making it blue guys, scientists, hot latina from fast and the furious = good, and guys with machine guns and large corporations = bad.I think HISHE could have some fun with this ending by just having all the marine and army dudes just say "whoa, these aliens are just like tall blue Indians, maybe we shouldn't go all Christopher Columbus on them" then giant scar "I love destroying big trees in the morning" marine guy could throw a wrapper on the ground which would make Neytiri shed a single tear.
AVATAR
I thought it was the best movie I've seen this year in theaters so far.
the first 70-80 minutes of
the first 70-80 minutes of this film were brilliant, the concept of a normal human becoming one of the Na'vi, changing his entire thought about life. but the rest of the film seemed sloppy and lazy. This movie climbs to the top with visuals, but i really only found the first half of it worth watching, even though the best fight scene is in the end.
Saw it in 3D, which for this
Saw it in 3D, which for this movie is a must. The 3D is critical to this movie...it helps you take the spirit journey that the marine does.Best movie I have seen since The Dark Knight.I do agree on the obivious story and predictable moments/setups, but it rises above it.
Tish Tosh
Absolute crap. 3D adds novelty only. There was plenty of wow in the standard 2 dimensions. Extra dimensions cannot add to the story or the acting of a film & therefore cannot be a critical element.I also take offence to paying extra for watching in 3D. 3D is being pushed as a way to save Hollywood (despite year on year record takings) as it is unpiratable - and we are being asked to pay for the upgrades required to save Hollywood. In no other industry would this be accepted! I'd love to say that 3D is still a gimmick, but I think the buddy holly glasses are here to stay.Er, other than that, I respect & value your opinion on this matter...Transcending the Arse of Reason in time for last orders
Had only one Problem *spoilers*
I love this movie! I can't believe that someone made a spaceship that is more realistic than the Discovery from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I had only one problem with it. *Warning! Spoilers Below!* At the end, the “evil” humans are kicked off the planet. The problem with this is that the ship they came on from Earth can travel at .7c (70 percent the speed of light). Because Alpha Centauri is a binary system, the humans could take the ship and fly out to the other star, then sling-shot around it to head back to Pandora. At the speed they would be going, a few pounds of rocks would have the same energy as a nuclear bomb. Just throw out some garbage, then start slowing back down for a rendezvous at Pandora while the garbage speeds ahead to take out the Na’vi. I don’t approve of this plan, but it is a deadly possibility. It would make a great HISHE short…
SF fan?
I agree Patrik - even from orbit they could have done all sorts of mischief.I did wonder what the Unobtanium was used for to make it so valuable. Peter F Hamilton's book Fallen Dragon explores some of the ideas behind interstellar trade & the drawbacks invovled. Transcending the Arse of Reason in time for last orders

Terrible
Okay, so the plot was extremely familiar. So familiar, in fact, that if I had fallen asleep halfway through and woken up at the end, I could have told you exactly what had happened. This, as has been pointed out, is not necessarily a bad thing, especially as it can give you the chance to look at the new or unique things going on that aren't necessarily tied to the plot. Like the science. Wait, don't pay attention to the science, 'cause it's terrible. Early on in the movie it is pointed out that Pandora is a low gravity world. We hear this once, so if you didn't notice it, it was there. Pandora being a low-grav world is a problem, for a couple of reasons:1) Humans would be considerably stronger, relative to everything else around them, and2) The bones of our opponents would possess no durability compared to ours, so creatures that are bullet-proof are bullshit. That's actually just the start of the problems with this movie, but this post has been long enough, so I'll let that sink in.
in my opinion, you should
in my opinion, you should try not to focus to much on hard facts (realism) and just enjoy the story/plot of the film. but i do agree, the entire movie was cliche central, which, to some people, seems like a big deal.
ways to make it more compeling
The more time that goes by since I saw this movie and have though about the movie and not just the visuals, the more I become kind of disappointed in the film. I was just thinking that it could have been really good if they had started the movie showing why unatainium was so important. Instead of it just being really expensive, couldn't it have been set up as something needed back on earth cause we are running out of energy and it will help rescue our planet. That way you would have been a little bit more torn between the dire need of getting the unatainium and the freedom, peace, and way of life we'd have to destroy from the aliens.
Supposedly
Supposedly it is needed as a new energy source, but that is never mentioned in the movie. I imagine a scene explaining this got cut because while it's never mentioned, several online writers have mentioned it. I completely agree this is a flaw.
:(
I never got to see it
we should find a way to
we should find a way to digitally see it together through the internet
somthing tells me...
For some reason I don't think I'd like to remember while everyone saw an epic in 3D I was the only one watching it on Bootlegged Home Camera diminsion.
Second Time Around
I just watched this a second time, this time in 3D. I met up with a friend and we had a drink first, which got me to thinking about 2/3 of the way through the film. If they make films any longer, they will either have to re-introduce the intermission, or fit you with a catheter as you go in.The distraction of 3D was the only saving grace of the second viewing. My friend who hadn't seen it before complained during the Braveheart speech bit that it was cheese-gratingly corny. The 3D was good, but to me it didn't bring enough to the table. The 3D either wasn't noticable or it was a bit forced and a bit weird looking. Fair play though - there were a couple of times my tummy flipped and some of the forest shots seemed amazingly deep. However, during the fast action sequences I felt the 2D version gave a clearer picture. Avatar is supposed to be the technology demonstration to sell 3D. I think I still need some selling. Definitely one of the better movies
While I didn't think that this movie was, by any means, the best; It was still one of the better movies I've seen in a long time. There were actually a few things that I liked about it.
That being said, I do agree with everyone about how predicable the plot was; but I guess it's best to keep it simple!
Avatar = Rip-off
I still haven't seen avatar, so I don't know that stories are any similar, but the movie bares an uncanny resemblence to a movie that literally no one saw a few years ago. Delgo, and apparently it makes Avatar not look so originalhttp://www.kontraband.com/pics/21063/Avatar-Vs-Delgo/
While the two movies may
While the two movies may have similarities to them, you can't just say that it was copied. Remember, the story for Avatar was written many years ago, and production itself takes over a year. Besides, only someone who's seen both movies would be able to give a (more) clear opinion (which it seems, from the comments anyways, that they two are very different).

Oh, I'm sure they are very different, I just thought that it was kinda weird.

It wasn't the originality of the film (good grief it borrows from everything), but the level of detail that makes this film stand out. I thought the flying alien design was very similar to the flying thingies in Pitch Black. Transcending the Arse of Reason in time for last orders

I finally saw it today, and I have to agree, I would say alot about but I don't have alot to say, but yeah it was pretty great.
It didn't remind you at all
It didn't remind you at all of Atlantis?I think this is a good analogy that sums everything upEragon : Star Wars :: Avatar : Atlantis
Saw it today in 3d and
Saw it today in 3d and Imax.I like how they kept the story simple so they can focus on other stuff but also annoyed me a little that if you sit through a 3 hour epic you should deserve a good story. The 3d adds nothing to the experience and they only used 3d in little places, a shame. Everthing else was great and hishe short has made little more sense, Yay.

Nice.
That was awesome Animal. It's pretty insane actually. :)
It's a shame films like
It's a shame films like District 9 suffer merely because the visuals were not, "fantastic", while the story is creative, unique, and touching. Then there are films like Avatar, which is now the "number one movie of all time", just because about 90% of its budget (300 million dollars) was put towards the visuals.what type of world do we live in today?
