This was the cartoon that never seemed to progress no matter how long I worked on it. After psyching myself up with the new years resolution of pushing harder than ever to make more cartoons, it was was only natural that irony set in and throw 3 times the amount of usual day job work at me, causing me to exhaust all of my creative energy by the end of the day. BUT, it's finally finished.
Some little facts about the short:
The idea, or ideas i should say, with Beowulf came from about 3 people I work with after discussing the film. I didn't intend on using all three of the ideas, but they just sort of fit together that way. Originally the idea was "What if Beowulf had sensitive side?" Since he's so butch and constantly boasting about how awesome he is and how many things he's conquered. We thought it would be funny to show him break down and slowly reveal his real self. someone sweet, kind, and cheerful :)
After that piece was completed, much like Braveheart, the short felt a bit random. But mostly felt incomplete. It was funny, but not how it SHOULD have ended. So the other two ideas were written in. Straight matter of fact endings, and toilet humor. :)
We didn't get to use Bryan English for the music on Beowulf this time also, which I'm sad about, but with my schedule being completely shot during this cartoon, I never got to work with Bryan in getting original music. But that is something I intend to focus on next time.
technical stuff: I used Painter X to color most of the characters and backgrounds in this one, instead of the usual photoshop. Since Beowulf is a photo realistic cg film, I tried a little harder to paint a more realistic style... but you can tell as the short goes, that the style begins to morph back to my original cartoon type. That probably has to do with taking almost 6 months on the cartoon. Sheesh.
The dragon's fire is the first time I've tried "cell animation" within the keyframe style i normally do. I painted about 8 or 10 frames of fire coming out of his mouth, and looped it accordingly to make a constant flame. I think it turned out pretty good for a first time try.
Well that's about all I can think of for now. I hope you guys got a kick out of Beowulf. I'm proud of how it turned out, but i definitely miss having multiple hands in the voice acting and creative process after this one. Next Time Right?

Beowulf
I just watched it...
You put a lot of stuff that i would of never thought of...
and i thought it was genious how you had him going overboard bragging about himself!!!
I know this is really really really early but, terminator is next huh?Ǭ¨?ɬ?? (Funny thing is i just made a post about it not too long ago)
Good job!!!
Can't wait untill the next one!!!
Beowulf
"I give hugs when no one else gives hugs"
Now thats a Hero! :D
Great job!
Oh, and if you are going to spend any time on photo realistic cg...You must spend it on Angelina! Damit man, what were you thinking!
Beowulf
Bwahahahahaha! I love it! Totally hilarious.
Beowulf
That was brilliant! I loved every part of it!
Beowulf
Funny... not going to say it's the best... I still really like Superman and Wonka... but, it's up there... excellent artwork and animation as usual... Kudos...

Beowulf
I really wish I could have seen you doing the voices for this one...especially the crying!
Nice job!
Beowulf
Well worth the wait...watched it 3 times to take it all in. DUDE...your boss should totally be fired for working you so hard  Thanks for sharing!
Beowulf
That was beautiful man. Solid way to start HISHEs 3rd season (gonna be a good one too... Terminator's next, huh? Hot dog!).
I'm with Buffs... woulda loved to have seen you record the crying bit.
(Poor Angelina.)

Awesome! Great fun.
I liked the subtle touches you added (as always), from the humorous - like the way the guards glance at each other - to the technical: the water effects, the shading and lighting, and the great pacing in the rapid fire multiple scenarios part.
And I agree with Buffs, Buck and Spud - it would've been to fun to see you cry - uh, I mean, record the crying. Grendel's voice was fun, too.
Congrats on getting it done, despite all the difficulties. "For every action towards [completion], there is an equal and opposite distraction."
Thanks, Cap!
P.S. "I give hugs when no one else will give hugs." I'm still laughing.
Beowulf
I think it's safe to say we'd all love to see you record the crying Cap. That was cool! My sister didn't like the movie but she loved the HISHE version... I may make a fan outta her yet!
AND TERMINATOR NEXT?! WOOT WOOT!!! What will this season bring? Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll rock!
Good job Daniel!
yea...
Yea, I'm kinda disappointed with the music. It was like the same lick every time the music came on. Most of your videos have pretty awesome music, and that's why I like you guys, cuz not a lot of shorts' producers actually put time into the music like you do. Music does a lot to a film ya know. This one was just disappointing.

I wonder how much money we would have to raise in order to hire a wild-life documentary video team to secretly film the daily activities of the often allusive Simplecap.
Beowulf
"No I did not kill Grendel's mother... at all."
That's just the best line in this one.
So is this Angelina's 2nd non speaking role in a HISHE? I think you should keep giving her occasional silent cameos until the actress agrees to do the voice work for herself.
Beowulf
thanks for the support guys :)
about the documentary crew... I think you'd be extremely bored if you watched my life. here's Daniel, sitting at a computer, here he is sitting at another computer, here he is feeding Kiddo, say hello Kiddo "bark", and here he is sitting back at the computer again.
I never thought about the Angelina none speaking part :) yeah this is her second appearance. different art though.

Oh yea, definately! Bruce Willis predicted that someone with a regular video camera would make a hit blockbuster movie.... then came The Blair Witch Project.
If ya won't agree to a movie Cap... how's about a reality show? Just like iTod. Ooooo!!! PODCAST!!!

Actually, I've also been thinking it would be cool to watch a HISHE "making of" piece. You could even make it more of a parody, with a mock serious narrator (or Kiddo?) talking over clips of the HISHE gang working on a short. Or you could do one of those high-speed items, hours of edited footage shown in seconds. Could be fun... well, for us, anyway. Maybe you're already planning to put one on the DVD?
Besides, Cap, I don't think your life is as boring as you say.

Kiddo narrating: Things went on like that for a while. Acting life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Daniel would show up with baggy eyes. Sometimes he was able to meet a deadline, sometimes not. And that's how it went for Daniel. That was his routine. Me, I'm gonna get someone to get me a peice of human food.
Beowulf
For my favorite line in this one I'm torn between "I give hugs when no one else will give hugs" and the line Buck suggested, "No I did not kill Grendel's mother...at all."
That last bit of dialogue between Beowulf and the King was all Daniel's idea and he sent it to me in a voice mail after he finished recording it (without telling me about it first). I about fell off the couch I was laughing so hard!
Anyway, we definitely want to do some sort of making of featurette for the "special edition" dvd...whenever we get around to it. :) HA! But yeah, Daniel doesn't give himself enough credit...his life is not boring. I mean just last night we contemplated playing connect four on his iPhone. Our lives are EXTREMELY exciting.
For the record, we didn't...we played the xbox instead.
Oh, and Babbz, Kiddo's narrative would be more like a repetition of your last line..."gotta get some people food."

Yeah... I wanted to give Kiddo a little Morgan Freeman sorta feel... and then take it back to his personality...
But realistically I thought that's what it'd be. Oh and "I win!"

Morgan Freeman Kiddo Voice Over would so rule!
Beowulf
I thought it was pretty good. I didn't see the movie, but I fully understood everything going on in this short, so that's an accomplishment. I wouldn't say this is in like the top ten percent, but I would say it's above average... maybe top 20 or 50 percent.
*sob* "I'm the giver of gifts to small children!" lol
And the dragon in the water scene was funny. Grendal patting him on the head and the other two guys looking at him. Funny thing is I had just come out of a little emotional fit myself right before I watched it. So thanks for the laugh at a stressful time for me, Cap. lol
Terminator? That's going to be great! Can't wait. Still waiting to see this one.

Jake: I didn't think Beowulf would end that way.
Gilinator5000: End? No, the movie doesn't end in the theaters. Beowulf's death is just one ending... One epic poem that we must all read in High School. The vague poetry of the story rolls back, and all turns to computer graphics on the silver screen... And then you see it.
Jake: What? Gilinator5000?... See what?
Gilinator5000: HISHE.com... and a new ending, with insightful dialogue and some toilet humor.
Jake: [smiling] Well, that isn't so bad.
Gilinator5000: [softly] No... No it isn't.

GOD, WOULDN'T IT!?!?!?! Can you imagine Morgan Freeman saying "SHOELACE ATTACK!!" and "Whatever, I still win."?
Oh man think of it... Morgan Freeman's voice saying "Weee!" as Kiddo is doin this...

i totally just ignored all the times throughout this movie that Beowulf could have been killed, but ended up giving long, pointless, drowned-out, self-centered speeches that just made everyone in the movie want to kill themselves instead of Beowulf
Beowulf
Well, it was not all talk...look at what kind of creature Beowulf spawned. He was a great hero, but in his mind much greater.

Well this was great! Only little minus is the graphics. I like more that cartoon style that was on Superman.
