This is a fantastic, unique take on this genre of movie and I loved watching it unfold…even if I doubt anyone would keep a camera running that long. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I have yet to view this film... but my friend has filled me in on some of the details... and I can't wait to see it... and I want to see the new Star Trek trailer on the big screen...

LetsGoBuffs's picture

It made me jump up and down and clap my hands at the awesomeness...and it's not just because I've been building it up in my head for 9 months. However, it took me a few hours to be able to do that because right after the movie, all I could do is sit there and stare at the credits and finally let my muscles relax.

I thought it was really well-done and extremely realistic. I did get seasick, but it was worth it.

However, if you didn't like Blair Witch, I think you probably won't like this. I thought both were so realistic, I could easily suspend disbelief about the camera running video. 14 thumbs up!

Did anyone's else movie make load popping noise, at first I thought it was done on purpose to make the movie feel more like realistic (Many home video camera's have poor sound buffers), but later in the film I started to think it could of been the theater I was at.

LetsGoBuffs's picture

We didn't have any weird sound issues...I think you got a bum theater. :(

I thought the movie was pretty amazing, minus the severely convenient and unlikely flaws that give HUD crazy camera opportunities. But without those moments the audience would be left with even less footage so i can deal with it. I really liked the story that's happening inside the madness. Rod has a one track mind, but there were still realistic choices being made throughout the movie.

I seem to remember a popping noise at the start, but our audience was goofing off right up till the movie actually started so i don't remember very well.

did anyone see something splash into the water of the last shot? I heard some people talking about it, but i missed it.

Went on rant, so I am just going to say Spoiler Warning.

Okay, I have seen it twice. I thought it was awesome, and I didn't particurally care for the Blair Witch Project. I have notice some people can either except not knowing everything and love the movie, but a lot my friends had too many questions. I tried to explain that this what the movie was all about, if you were in the city(mind you I live about 10 minutes away from NYC), and suddenly some giant creature attack, this is what you would see and know. You wouldn't know where it came from or much else about the creature. I mean they had to put the little quest in there or else the story would not have moved along. And if they didn't give us insane shots, many people would have been even angrier about having less answers.

Also, we must remeber this is the same guy who leaves us with tons of questions in lost. The answers are probably hidden.
On that note, did anyone know what the Russian guy told Hud?

If you can live with questions or like to make your own answers,
like my friend had a motive for the beast:
"Creature gets lost from Atlantis, sees a Giant Green Humanoid, tries to ask it for directions, she just keeps pointing up, so he slaps her. Now he didn't mean to send her head flying, but to his knowledge he kill the Statue of Liberty and all the witnesses had to go. Especially people with cameras, thats hard evidence."

Anyone, deduce questions. All I know is it most likely from the ocean, because it had turtle head, and many other amphibious creature parts.

Also, I thought the babies reminded me more of the creatures from Tremors 2: The Aftershock but with spider legs.

I believe that the Russian guy was asking about his family.

High light text below (because of spoilers):
Yes, at the end of the movie right when the it shows them on the ferries wheel, on the right hand side of the couple, you can see something big crashing into the water.

Soo... was the monster ever seen? I haven't seen it yet... Sometimes it just sucks to live in Japan...

Also is the camera real shaky like it usually is in home movies? Cause I get queazy if I don't take an asprine... I know I'm weird... But that's why yall love me!

LetsGoBuffs's picture

Yes, the camera was really shaky. I loved it because it seemed SO REAL, but I did get nauseated. I think partly because of the intensity of the subject matter, but mostly because of the camera. At one point, I was trying to plan my escape route if I had to run to the bathroom!

But it was so worth it!

So take your queasy meds, Babbs.

Jadeshark's picture

I loved everything about that movie...I need to see it again!

LetsGoBuffs's picture

SPOILER!
I heard on the radio this morning that, if you stay past the credits, you hear this weird audio that just sounds like nothing. However, if you play it back, it's someone whispering "it's still alive". HEELLLOOOO SEQUEL!

Then someone called in to say that the producers are going to do a sequel, but it will be about the same event from another part of the city. I think that's a pretty cool way to do it!

Anyway, finally, something new. I like it more and more as I think about it!

Tina's picture

I'm so surprised I didn't get more nauseous because I tend to get motion sick...but it didn't bother me too bad. It also didn't bother me that it wasn't explained because I don't think that was within the scope of the film. And I loved that...I liked the regular person perspective. I also loved the story of Rob and Beth...and I'm glad Hud was such a nosy person! :)

Rhombusaurus: I cracked up at your friends explanation. Poor, misunderstood beast. :)

this was an amazing movie. and after hearing about some of the hidden stuff in it I really want to see it again ASAP. in the beginning the camera work did make me nauseous, but it added a really nice effect to the movie, and I loved the change of perspective from the normal view of being the all- seeing person that jumps around from place to place, to actually seeing it from the viewpoint of one of the characters. and my friends and I are still laughing about Hud's comment regarding the homeless people getting lit on fire.

there were some slightly unrealistic things about the movie, but nothing that made me dislike the movie in any way. I'm also curious though as to how many cameras they broke while filming the movie.

but as I said, this was a great movie, and I can't wait to see it again, though I'll probably wait until it goes to DVD to watch it a second time.

LetsGoBuffs's picture

YES! I can't WAIT to watch it on DVD! To be able to pause things and zoom in...

I strongly suggest going to the movies to see a movie, now if you want to look for hidden stuff

I saw this really great video of J.J. Abrams at TED (pre-Cloverfield). It was a really unique insight into what makes his creative brain tick...and The Mystery Box.

(I'm going to post this on the LOST thread too...)

Tina's picture

I totally LOVE him now. Thanks for sharing that video...and introducing me to TED for that matter. I read an article about Cloverfield and Abrams in Entertainment Weekly and he talked about his obsession with boxes and how the director for Cloverfield was a childhood friend he used to make movies with on his 8mm. It made me really happy and after seeing this talk I think he's fantastic! Yay for JJ Abrams!! :D

I don't know what is more amazing the movie or all the marketing/backstory.
I just saw the movie last night and was impressed by the non-stop action. I do admit their were a bunch of little logic moments where you have to say, "Oh, come on" and a couple that seemed clearly to be done for the audiance alone, but in all really impressive.
Although, I think it will take days for my brain to catch up with all the information from the frantic camera angles.

There is a ton of info on the web on the backstory, which is really amazing. From the looks of it, we are looking at a prequel more then a sequel for the next movie.

Two things to take notice:
1. Yes, at the end something does fall into the ocean on the right side. Read the background story for the possible answer on what it is.
2. There is something said after all the credits are done, I missed it because we were pushed out by employees, but it is worth hearing.

For those who don't want go to see the movie twice. Also, it's been officially announced that the not only the sequel already in the works, it's been in production even before the Cloverfield came out.

CTALONS's picture

What are the odds that the end voice over is proof that our couple is still alive?

citizenbuck's picture

Finally saw Cloverfield this weekend.

It certainly lived up to the trailer, didn't it? I enjoyed the movie more upon reflection than the actual first viewing. I was expecting a monster movie, not a disaster flick. Ooops. I think I'll enjoy the film more on additional viewings, you know? To me the most disturbing scene was when they were trying to find a way to get into Beth's appartment. The monster's scenes were mild in comparison IMO.

By the way, I was absolutely delighted when the grumpy girl popped, but have no idea what the science behind that was supposed to be. Were they trying to accomplish anything (eggs) or was that just an effect of ... a poison or something. Anyone know?

I had read a number of reports that the little monsters were actually parasites that hitched a ride with Clover. The sites point to one of the orginal title for the movie "Parasites" and in the actual film you see Clover scratching them off his body. The exploding comes from their bite not reacting well to the human body.

isaac5's picture

im not reading any thing you guys wrote i want to see that movie soo bad and its on dvd now i think

Drewish's picture

So, I thought the movie was good... Alot better than I thought it would be. I agree that the close ups of the monster weren't neccessary, and the tunnel scene was kind of predictable once you see the parasites fall off the monster. But it wasn't bad and there was some good dialogue.

And yes I had to watch it twice to make sure but you do see something land in the ocean maybe 50 miles offshore. I barely caught it the first time... Good thing PayperView plays movies over and over and over...

not to bad. Look at the end tho when they're filming it, then something splashes into the water, and thats were the monster comes up. i cant wait till the sequal, but i hope they use an actual camera man and stuff, because i got motion sickness during the movie

this is some info about the movie:

The company rob was leaving to was a japanese company that experimented on some stuff. an experiment when wrong though, and somehow a flying egg thingy ended up in new york.

It was a huge parasite thing that dropped other parasites just like it. when they bit other people, they exploded and more parasites crawled out of there body. thats why the nurse was like, "OFMG! WE HAVE A BITE! :O!!!!"

there's actually more than just one cloverfeild monster, because at one part when everyones on the bridge, a giant tenticle comes out and smashes it.

the recording thing at the end of the movie was something that u can peplay backwards i think or something. but all it says is "its alive... Help..."

there going to make a sequal to this movie in 2009. :D i cant wait!
