"This story was definitely more personal and disturbing than the original. Zombie is pretty good as a director however he seems a tad obsessed with close ups. I'm pretty sure we saw up the nose of every actor in the film. The acting was convincing, however some of these “teenagers” are in their thirties. Daeg Faerch was chilling as the young Michael Myers and Sheri Moon-Zombie did a believable Deborah Myers.
I have to be honest; this is probably my last horror movie for awhile. I think I've developed a more “tender” soul and it was really hard to objectively watch this movie without feeling ill and sad. Overall it delivered what it set out to do, and Zombie created a film that paid homage to some memorable scenes from the classic without making a carbon copy.
I give it 3 out of 5"

Halloween (2007)
i liked it. Rob is coming up in the filmmaking business. he did a great idea with the background story of Michael and how he became the sick twisted killer he is known today. especially with a few cameos by various horror actors that Rob has worked for, like Ken Foree(Dawn of the Dead original), Danny Trejo(From Dusk Till Dawn), Bill Moseley(TCM2, House of 1000 Corpses, Devil's Rejects), Sid Haig(House of 1000 Corpses, Devil's Rejects), Dee Wallace-Stone(Cujo, Hills Have Eyes, Howling), Tom Towles(Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Ho1kC, TDR), Brad Dourif(Child's Play trilogy, Lord of the Rings), Danielle Harris(Halloween 4 & 5), etc. plus, there was more gore than there should have been in the original. i saw the film during my vacation in Disney World, and i will not kid u, i jump out of my seat at least 4 times. worth watching, worth paying that freaking ticket(s). 4 stars for the effort.

I hate that they presented young Michael's family the way they did.
The original showed him in a fairly normal family living in a fairly normal looking house in a fairly normal looking neighborhood. It could be any kid in any house in any neighborhood.
Yeah the fam has some problems, but nothing that would cause someone to such extreme behavior.
His family wasn't horrible... afterall, he was Laurie's cousin and who is more normal than Laurie? It made you look at your own neighborhood a bit.
Michael's humanity was lost to something evil (insert supernatural implications here). Simple as that.
This new Michael was in a horrible situation. Whether or not you felt sympathy for his childhood, there were (sadly) familiar elements to his story and a basis to his pattern of behavior. This Michael wasn't necessarily evil. He was messed up.
I think Rob Zombie rather missed the point. The nature of evil vs the nurture of evil maybe?

Very interesting Buck. I have to admit I did not re-watch the original and its probably been over a decade since I've seen it. I like your point though and I think that might be why Zombie's movie disturbed me so much. I was thoroughly disgusted and yet felt strangely sad.
OH, and this is brilliant:

not a good movie. waaaay too much sex and profanity, and thats coming from a 13 year old!
the only thing that i liked about this film, was that it dispelled the whole curse of thorn crap. but, not a toch on the original
i would give it 1.5 stars

I must agree that much of the cursing and behavior seemed to be added just for shock value (of course, I was watching the "Unrated Edition", so my experience may have been just a little bit different).
I also preferred the eerieness of the original more, when you saw the view entirely first-person, had no idea what was going on, then adults rushing to you, yanking off the mask, and revealing...A TEN YEAR OLD BOY? WHAT THE JUJUBES?
However, I did like the fact that it was a fresh new take on the whole Michael Myers thing, and I think Rob Zombie did an excellent job with it. It could've been better though...

Halloween (2007)
I just watched it alone, which wasn't a good plan, I can tell you that!
To me, it was an good horror movie and a pretty good remake. Yes, way too much sex and profanity. That got really annoying. But I think it took some of the best parts about the original (which I love) and expanded them. And the acting was awesome, overall.
I think your nurture vs. nature thought is a good one. There was something so awful about the original that he was just a normal boy that was evil. However, I also liked that a bunch of external factors in the remake just made Michael snap. Which is creepier, pure evil? Or that anyone, with the right set of circumstances, could turn into a murderous beast?
There is something to be said for the simplicity of the original, but if everyone is just going to keep remaking good movies, at least this one doesn't suck. :) On the horror remake scale, it's not as good as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but miles above Psycho.
