Apologies if you are now humming the Kool & the Gang hit, but the "Happy..." thread appears to have been a casualty of the move. Here's what's coming up:

Firstly, Happy Blue Monday... or rather not. The most depressing day of the year is coming up - Monday the 25th. What will be particularly depressing about this Blue Monday is that it is also Burns Night, but we won't be allowed to celebrate as it is a school night. Monday 25th also sees the start of Food Allergy and Intolerance Week. I had to read that twice - at first I thought, "There's an Intolerance Week?" The 30th January is the start of Storytelling week. James, this is such a solid thread idea - thanks for restarting it, and keep it up... Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the U.S. (third Monday of January, to celebrate his birthday on January 15). Here's an interesting twist - an address given by MLK in Canada:It is a deep personal privilege to address a nationwide Canadian audience. Over and above any kinship of U.S. citizens and Canadians as North Americans, there is a singular historical relationship between American Negroes and Canadians.Canada is not merely a neighbour to Negroes. Deep in our history of struggle for freedom Canada was the North Star. The Negro slave, denied education, de-humanized, imprisoned on cruel plantations, knew that far to the north a land existed where a fugitive slave, if he survived the horrors of the journey, could find freedom. The legendary underground railroad started in the south and ended in Canada. The freedom road links us together. Our spirituals, now so widely admired around the world, were often codes. We sang of 'heaven' that awaited us, and the slave masters listened in innocence, not realizing that we were not speaking of the hereafter. Heaven was the word for Canada and the Negro sang of the hope that his escape on the underground railroad would carry him there. One of our spirituals, 'Follow the Drinking Gourd', in its disguised lyrics contained directions for escape. The gourd was the big dipper, and the North Star to which its handle pointed gave the celestial map that directed the flight to the Canadian border.Martin Luther King Jr.

I was curious, does the UK have a Holiday similar to MLK (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) Day? Or possibly a figure similar to Dr. King?

Jamesbloke's picture

Not really. Despite our chequered history, race relations wasn't really a problem here - with us it was Women's suffrage that was the sticky point. I can thoroughly recommend watching "Amazing Grace" which chronicles the trials of William Wilberforce pursuing a legislative change to slave trade in British law. This is not an unsignificant thing - as Britain then bullied the rest ofthe world not under its dominion to follow suit. I won't deny that this possibly wasn't soley or entirely for altruistic reasons. In fairness, we "don't like to make a fuss" so I don't think there is anyone in particular (apart from Guy Fawkes) who is actually celebrated, but I'll have a think on this. We tend to do statues instead... Transcending the Arse of Reason in time for last orders

Agreed - Amazing Grace was a good movie. Good story, educational, inspiring. Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four, King Arthur, Hornblower BBC Series) gave a solid performance.

Commonly called Presidents Day and generally considered the celebration of Lincoln's (Feb 12) and Washington's (Feb 22) birthdays, the third Monday of Febraury is officially observed as Washington's Birthday.Fun facts: - On the actual birthday (Feb 22), Washington's farewell address is read in the Senate. - People used to make lots of cherry desserts to honor Washington, but I had never heard of this and don't think it's done much anymore - anyone care to give anecdotal evidence to the contrary? - In Canada, the third Monday of February is Family Day (a statutory holiday in three provinces), and February 15 is also "National Flag of Canada Day, or just Flag Day."

Ohio State cancelled classes today!!!Now that causes for a celebration!!!

Damn, missed it. Ecological Debt Day was August 21st. This represents the day we run out of renewable energy every year. Transcending the Arse of Reason in time for last orders

Today is the worst day of the year. The first day of school. This seriously sucks balls for me because summer was going so well and now all the social benefits of the summer are cut off.I'm homeschooled so its not like I get to "See my friends again" so all my friends are at church, and during the summer we have church picnics which give me good time to be social and hang out particularly with girls. But nooo, since people have school to do we can't do that. the other thing that does happen during the school year is when we get together at a high school and play ultimate Frisbee, which during the summer is great! A bunch of people from our sister church come, it lasts until 9:30 pm with 50 plus teens there, it's awesome. but in the school year, we'll be getting home at 8:00 pm and it will get colder and less people will be able to come, and since I'm young to the group all the people my age will come way less often, also the girl I like particularly is the oldest of her siblings, so she has no older siblings to take her there like I do, and she gets there and leaves when her mom takes her or gets her. Plus she's the first of her click to be going, so none of her friends are there so she has little reason to come anyway. The ONLY GOOD THING about the school year is that now our church will be doing a once a month 6th and 7th grade Sunday school class, which they weren't doing before. So I could hang out with the ppl I want once a month.

Take it from me, the perspective becomes a lot different when you get to compare it to school especially for you since you should be in High School soon, a lot of the "fun" you hear about it does not meet the intrests of probably anyone who posts here.

isaac5's picture

I still have two years till I'm in high school. what "fun" have I heard about?

Bliss's picture

Well maybe you have, maybe you haven't. In your case you haven't, but no high school comes equiped without a bunch of students (probably freshman) who start out acting all like "Woohoo, HIGH SCHOOL, it's time to have some FUN!"

isaac5's picture

I think I know what you mean... do you mean like the nerds who think that school is fun and enjoy learning?

Bliss's picture

Well I wouldn't say "nerds" but there are plenty of students who do enjoy school and are perfectly fine with it.

isaac5's picture

There are plenty of them, but that doesn't mean they aren't nerds.

animal's picture

I find it quite interesting that, given you're in Summer School, you have a particular "First Day of Class." So are you going to go to a High School, or are you going to be homeschooled throughout your k-12 years?

isaac5's picture

Summer school? What are you talking about? actually I've been home schooled since 3rd grade... basically I do a thing called PA Cyber, (Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School) it's a state wide school of children doing school on computers, over the internet at home. It has an office of teachers, they send us computers and microphones and we have regular Summers, only we can't have snow days so our summers are longer. now I have that Rhett and Link son in my head. "I saw one just the other day, his innocent face so kind, he said "Hi, my name's Billy, I'm a home-schooler" and then he robbed me blind!"

animal's picture

Sorry, I meant to say "given that you're in HOME school" not "summer school."So does that mean that you're going to be inrolled in PA Cyber through High School as well?

isaac5's picture

My folks didn't like the influence public High School's had on my older siblings, and the two older than me have done high school in PA Cyber, so yeah.

animal's picture

What kind of disastrous influence did public school have on your older siblings?

isaac5's picture

Nothing too major, it's just my parents would rather us grow up next to Christians who's parents they know very well(from our church) than to kids they don't know at all who could be getting them into trouble. now i admit that there is bad on both sides, and good on both sides; its just socializing with people form the church who all have good examples of humble Christians for parents is a better influence on a child growing in they're faith than someone who doesn't. Also think to al the bad things you learned or picked up from fellow students that you would rather your younger self not be open to or know about? That wouldn't happened if you weren't exposed to those fellow student who effected you in that way.
