Are you a Grisham fan?I just finished reading The Associate - good read. It kept its pace and the ending was satisfying, yet realistic. Grisham is a real fan of the theme of being trapped, isn't he? And secrets - he's big on secrets, too. (It'd be interesting to do a psycho-literary profile on him.) Last summer I read The Appeal. There are some resemblances to real life in that one - well, my life anyway.Spoiler (mild) re: Grisham novel endingsThe endings of both of these books are different than earlier Grisham novels... in that they don't have the same sense of crushing victory and everything tied up neatly with a bow. Or am I misremembering? Maybe I'm getting the movie version endings mixed up with the books? As an example, I think particularly of The Firm... Comments?End SpoilersSo... what is your most recently read, or favorite, Grisham novel?* * (Red, I'll specifically invite you to jump in, since you talked about Grisham in the Favorite Books thread - yeah, I did my homework before posting! ;)

I cannot believe I even checked this thread and you made a personal comment to ME.  I've avoided this section of the forum because my reading has declined drastically since having a child.  At your mention I poured back through that old Favorite Books thread and wrote down a few I still haven't read that looked interesting.  I felt a little better that I actually HAD read a few of the suggestions (although not nearly as many as I wanted to).  I'm also definitely checking out Sling and Arrows. :)So Grisham.  I haven't read one of his novels in years!  He's one of those authors that I got hooked on and just read and read until I burnt myself out and every book he wrote seemed exactly the same.  I think its been enough time though that I should go back to him because I do think he's a skilled, intelligent writer.  Which of the two you read above would you recommend most?**and although it probably won't be "soon", I promise to get back to you. :)

Well, I'm glad you decided to check the thread! (And do watch Slings & Arrows - it's quirky, edgy and funny. Caveat: you have to watch at least the first three episodes before you think about giving up...  and I think Season 1 might be the best of the three seasons.)To answer your question - of the two novels above, I enjoyed The Associate more - it has more momentum and suspense. You have a point about his novels seeming very similar - particularly when noticing the common themes I mentioned. I had given his stuff a long rest before I read The Appeal last year.
