So is LOST wearing everyone else out as much as it is me?
Can it pull out of the dull slope it seems to be heading down?
Do you think the final answers will ever live up to the anticipation?
What is it about this latest batch of episodes that seems so weak compared to the last two Seasons?

I'm very excited, but I also don't want it to come because then I go into post-LOST depression. It's like this after football season for me too. *sigh*

8 long months until it comes on again...

Tina's picture

Yes, I totally agree. Fortunately post-LOST depression is only 4-5 months. Not quite as terrible. ;)

LetsGoBuffs's picture

Not this time, unfortunately. It won't be on until FEBRUARY. It's Lost's longest hiatus EVER.

Daniel's picture

I'm all for that actually. I don't like them splitting up the cast and shooting multiple shows at the same time to save time and money. I'd much rather wait and have a non-stop great season.

Tina's picture

WOW. That's kind of risky of them. Tonight better be pretty freaking awesome then.

Ok, I was 10 episodes behind, so I've been avoiding this thread like the plague, but I caught up today, just in time for the finale. So I have a couple of little things, so forgive me if they are an episode or two old.

First, Kweejibo touched on this, but I thought you guys might be interested in this article about the Lost end date timeline.

Second, to echo Red, why does Richard not age?

Third, I just wanted to throw out another Jacob theory. Could he be the smoke monster? And what's that powder surrounding his shack?

Fourth, Who are the people in the Looking Glass station, and why did Desmond lie to Charlie? Or did Desmond really see Charlie die because someone is giving him his flashes for some reason, and wanted Charlie to come down there. It was Juliet that told them about that place.

Fifth, did anyone else notice that the picture on the head monk's desk when Des turned in his monk clothes was of the head monk and that old lady that wouldn't sell him the ring because he was supposed to be on the island?

Ok, I think that's all I have for now. It's been painful to see this thread keep adding pages and not be able to read it. I'm glad I can now participate. Buffs, I would've been right there with you defending the virtues of Lost during the lull episodes.

LetsGoBuffs's picture

Glad you're back with us, Mortoca! What I'm most interested in is the whole Jacob deal. Could Jacob be the smoke monster? Could the ash or whatever circling his house be a latent smoke monster? Does Jacob control the smoke monster? Did Locke see Jacob? Can Ben control Jacob? Was that smoke monster dust in his chair? What's with the crazy jars of gunk on the windowsill? Is he wearing old timey clothes?

It's a total mystery. I'm stumped. You know, everything else on the island can be explained multiple ways - - scientifically - - but the smoke monster is the thing that is always the big question mark for me. And now its possible link to Jacob makes it even crazier.

Daniel's picture

I'm willing to bet Loche saw Jacob, but Ben didn't think he would be able to.

Ronin's picture

Last night's episode was sufficiently mind-blowing. Now to wait 9 months for the next season. :x

LetsGoBuffs's picture

*holding head*

eergh! what just happened? I'm so confused?

Daniel's picture

I thought the season finale was awesome! So, Jack's phone call is going to prove to be a mistake. I wonder how that's going to pan out. Hurley in the van was the greatest moment in maybe Lost history. It will be interesting to see if they continue with the flash forwards instead of the flashbacks next season. They kind of have to so we can figure out who was in the coffin. Except that doesn't really create any "danger" for the present time on the island if we keep seeing who ends up making it home.

But i'm sure they've got a good line up that will be amazing. Only two seasons left, correct?

second question, have the others ever killed any of the plane crash survivors, except Ben's story? They've gotten close, but i don't remember anyone getting killed. Except the survivors have killed quite a few of the others. I find that interesting. Also (this doesn't have to do with the finale but) Juliet's backstory doesn't have a dark side to it like all of the plane crash cast does. And Ben's story wasn't dark untill he made it dark on the island.

LetsGoBuffs's picture

Three seasons left, but they will be short ones. The series will end in 2010 (doesn't that sound very futuristic? 2010! ooooh!)

I looked closely at the newspaper clipping from Jack's LA Times (from April 5, 2007). The obituary was for a man, but that's about all I could read. Also, the Hoffs/Drawlar Funeral Home is an anagram for Flash Forward...those crazy writers!

If Naomi doesn't belong to Penny Widmore, how the HECK did she get that picture of Desmond and Penny? That is so weird? And LittleRedDeath, I'm still confused about your observation that, if this is in the future, how the HECK is Christian Shephard still alive?

Daniel's picture

well. Penny told Charlie that it wasn't her boat right? the boat Naomi said she came from. Also i'd like to add that the Penny and Charlie scene was a little too much "star trekish" if you asked me :)

I'm suspecting whoever Naomi works for is trying to stop Penny? maybe? or just stop anyone from discovering anything. I DON'T KNOW.

also, you never saw Jack's father. He could actually still be dead, even though Jack's wording sounded like he was still around.

mortoca's picture

That's what we were thinking at work, too, Cap. Jack is pretty strung out during the two times that he talks about his dad.

I also had the thought that this is the halfway point, so maybe instead of flashbacks, we'll see flash forwards now. I really hope that they're going to be able to change the outcome of these flash forwards, though. That's a pretty crappy fate for Jack. Plus he recognizes that he's still supposed to be on the island.

Did anyone else think that Charlie's death was pointless? He had plenty of time to go out of the room and close the door, or even swim out through the port hole.

LetsGoBuffs's picture

Well, the more I think about it, the more I feel that Charlie's death was the ultimate. He was living on borrowed time since Desmond kept saving him. He quietly accepted his fate because he knew that his death would lead to rescue for the others. If he had tried to survive, it probably wouldn't have worked out, so I thought it was really cool and just perfect.

But, yes, at the time I couldn't stop thinking SWIM OUT OF THE HOLE!!!

Tina's picture

Phew! I should have known better than to not log on first thing this morning!

BUT...I watched it again at lunch with my husband and I have a few new insights.

First, yes, Jack was strung out when mentioning his Dad. The first time in the pharmacy he says his dad is away on a trip and then storms off when she starts to call. So he could be using his dad's DEA (drug number) post mortem. The second time everyone kind of looks at him crazy when he says go get his dad and see how drunk he is...and then he kind of stops himself and says don't pity me. Its kind of like he remembers his dad is dead. I don't know. Also, Ben MENTIONS that his dad is dead when he's telling him he has nothing to go back to, which I thought was interesting...like maybe the writers wanted us to notice this.

Second, I think our russian friend has a special gift which I can't wait to learn more about. The man is invincible. I have no doubt that he is still alive. And to answer Cap's question, I think we can say he killed Charlie, so that's at least one. On the same note, I wish I could accept Charlie's death as beautifully as you do Buffs. It kind of frustrated me a lot more upon second viewing.

Finally, it would totally be worth re-listening to Kate and Jack's conversation at the end a couple of times. He says things like, "I'm sick of lying." and "We made a mistake." And Kate says stuff like, "this is not going to change" and the obvious "he's going to be wondering where I am."

OH! And one more thing...I think its funny that they wanted to use Walt again, and its only been about 30 days at most, yet he looks 2.5 years older! That's what they get for using an actor about to hit puberty.

I will wait to share my Jacob thoughts because my post is already crazy long!

Daniel's picture

I thought Charlie's death was very powerful, just because before the finale he was always so scared and constantly asking Desmond if he'd had a any flashes lately. He was always so worried about himself. But when he finally saw that Desmonds last vision was true, rather than run away and save his own skin, he closed the door to save everyone else. Yeah, i think he could have fit through the blown out window, but I don't think he wanted to. It felt like he was making sure everything happened like it was supposed to so Claire would for sure be rescued, because she was the first person they cut to after he died.

I liked it.

LetsGoBuffs's picture

Ethan attempted to kill Charlie, but didn't succeed. But, in all fairness, he was kind of off on his own - - crazy and solo (or at least, that's Juliet's story). Also, Goodwin killed Nathan, one of the guys in Ana Lucia's group (that she put in the pit).

Yeah, what is UP with Mikhail? Do he and Locke have some sort of crazy island regeneration powers?

I wonder if they'll try to make up a story about why Walt is aging so quickly, or if we just have to suspend disbelief. I was really wondering what they were going to do about that when the time came to show him again! He's wearing the same clothes he was wearing when he left on the boat with Michael, so I guess we're just supposed to pretend that he's still 11...maybe...

mortoca's picture

You're wrong Cap. His death blew. Your opinion is invalid.

Just kidding. I would probably have been less self-sacrificial though. I turned off the flashing yellow thingy. That's all it should take, right? I guess you're right that the lameness of the circumstances did illustrate that he was choosing to die, and it didn't just sneak up on him. If that's what they wanted to show, then I applaud them.

And I consider your opinion extra valid, if that's even possible.

Really Charlie could have left the door open when the water came flooding in. They were in a big room, it would take a long time to fill up. At least long enough to get SCUBA gear on. Or if Charlie just had to close the door he could have swam out the window once the water pressure equalized. Honestly he drowned too fast. When he swam down to the looking glass at first he was under for much longer and doing much more strenuous activity. I could continue poking holes in the story but you get the point. Charlie didn't have to die. Also does everyone agree that the funeral Jack goes to in the future is Ben's?

I'm pretty sure that Charlie let himself die because Desmond told him that he had to die in order for Claire and the Baby to get saved. I agree, the situation he was in was completely escapable.. (there should have been a pocket of air in the top of the room since the porthole wasn't directly at the ceiling. )

As far as the funeral, Ben's a small guy, but the coffin seemed to small for even him..

Tina's picture

Yep. After much internet research, my vote is that the funeral was for Walt. But who knows...

LetsGoBuffs's picture

Dang, no family and no friends? Walt would have to have really screwed up for that to have happened...I'm still out. I can't even speculate!

Tina's picture

Well, yes, my theory there is that this is not too long after they returned and Walt moved around so much that he didn't really have friends and family. Michael must be dead too.

Oh who knows!?!?
I really have no idea. :D

Here's the text from the story in the LA Times that Jack ripped out

The body of John Lantham of New York was found shortly after 4 a.m. in the 4300 block of Grand Avenue. Ted Worden, a doorman at the Tower Lofts complex, heard loud noises coming from the victim's loft. Concerned for tenants' safety, he entered the loft and found the body hanging from a beam in the living room. According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Latham (sic) is survived by one teenaged son. Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening.

I've had to avoid this thread for a long time because I wasn't watching lost. I had enough addictions in my life and I knew this show would become another if I started.

However, I had a rare moment of complete boredom the other night and I went and rented the first season of lost... And marathoned it. It's a pretty fun ride so far. Can't wait to see what happens next. I'll check in here again when I've caught up with you guys.

Tina's picture

Welcome to the addiction Valar! :)

And no rush, you have until February until Season 4 starts...

Welp, got season 2 and 3 and cleared my schedule, so I'm allllll caught up. Holy HELL do those guys know something about writing.

I mean, they use every blatant suspense building trick in the book, their characters make RADICALLY out of character decisions at times, people forget all about the smoke monster until they hear trees ripping up, I could go on and on, there's a whole great big pile of inconsistencies, and convenient happenstance beyond what can be explained by the islands mysterious powers.

And despite all that it's still without a doubt one of the best series I've ever seen! Anyone can sit around and nitpick the decisions they've made, but what they've accomplished is nothing short of astounding. The sheer volume of short stories they've had to create for the backstories alone is simply astounding, especially when you consider the level of completion that was required before they could even shoot the first episode.

Guys, I'm a writer, it's what I do, and I'm just blown away. I saw a lot of talk about slow episodes and seemingly pointless plots. I understand the frustration, you were having to wait a week between every episode. It makes me respect the writers all the more. It's DANGEROUS to set up backstory that is vital, but slow. It's dangerous to take tangents that don't end up being a part of the main story. It is dangerous, but it makes the experience so much richer. The characters that died right as their stories were seemingly beginning (Boone, Shannon, Libby and Eko just to name a few) serve a VITAL purpose. Because the writers are willing to kill off such interesting and promising characters at seemingly random times, we truly believe that no character is ever truly safe. When they're in danger, we feel true tension, because these writers may just have the stones to bump them off.

I completely understand the frustrations you all were posting, but having watched it as a whole, I am overwhelmed by how great this story is. I still find myself yelling at the screen half the time saying "OH COME ON, WHO'D REALLY DO THAT?!?!" but I love every second of it. They hide their hand for a long time on the really important topics, but they have such interesting backstories and side stories to tell that I can't really bring myself to care. Now that I know that we've topped the hill and are beginning the decent I am all the more excited. Now I know they're not going to try and just drag this out for as long as they can. We can believe that we'll get answers.

For those of you who don't want to read my incoherent fanboy post, I'll put it simply. Lost owns, pure and simple. It's flawed as hell, but it's fun as hell too. After having to watch such drivel and bad acting as shows like Heroes I'll take Lost's inconsistencies any day.

Battlestar Galactica is still better though =). Nearly as imaginative and far fewer "C'MON" moments.

LetsGoBuffs's picture

YAY ValarMorghulis!

I agree with most of your points...and I LOVE the show. Where else have you ever been so WTF? even after 3 seasons into the series? And you still care about it! And the fans online are crazy rabid. And there are the podcasts. And the articles. If you give it time and get into it, it just works people up into a lather. I LOVE LOST!

Now what I disagree about a bit is inconsistencies in how people act. I think that there's so much more to these characters that we don't know that their actions might not be that far off base. Plus, I think that we all make weird choices, especially when we're stressed. So, to me, there have been very few times when I just can't believe when someone has done something. Human nature is not very predictable, and people have light and dark sides. In my opinion, having these little flaws in decision making makes the writing even more spectacular.

I love your ideas about killing off people right as their story becomes important...that's exactly how I feel. It also comes right when people redeem their naughty behavior in most cases. Which I TOTALLY love, by the way. You're right - - no one is safe.

I'm just glad there aren't more shows like this. My life would be spent on the couch and in front of random blogs and message boards. Good thing most of TV is utter crap.

You know that people are drooling over a series when they make action figures. I want a Mr. Echo figure. What is cooler than a big black man beating people down with his huge stick. All sexual innuendos aside the actual figure looks really cool and all the figures are very accurate. This is a series that when I have kids I'll say to them "Have you ever heard of the show LOST? It was long running action thriller that played a long time ago but it was one of the best tv creations American television has produced."
