Corey Haim died early this morning. His is such a sad life story. Many of you may know him from the tv show The Two Coreys (I never watched it), some of you may not know of him at all... and some of you may know him from movies in the 80s when he was young. This brief write-up on Lucas says it better than I can. I saw it a long time ago, and remember it as strangely thoughtful for what seems like a formulaic teen movie.

Quick synopsis: Lucas is a really bright, sensitive teen, who ends up on the wrong side of the "cool kids" in his high school - formulaic indeed. Two unexpected (in terms of formula) events take place simultaneously: he befriends and falls for an older girl who is on the fringe of the cool group, and the football quarterback takes Lucas under his wing. Things accelerate from there.

Both the character and the movie have unexpected layers. And the film might simply be of interest because (as the linked article points out) it's a first appearance for Jeremy Piven and Winona Ryder, and it captures one of Charlie Sheen's earlier performances.

Haim certainly had his troubles - another example of what Hollywood can do to actors, particularly young ones - but I remember that he did bring a lot of joy to people with his work. And for the record, even though the author of the article contrasts the depth of Haim's performance in Lucas with his role in The Lost Boys (original), I still loved the latter. ;)

Lucas is a very sweet movie.  I actually saw it later in highschool because everyone constantly told me I looked like the girl from "Lucas".  I don't necessarily see it, but I got that a LOT.  I think Corey Haim is just precious in that movie, and I agree, it is strangely thoughtful for that type of film.

I enjoyed quite a few of his movies and think it's pretty sad that drugs got the best of him.  Happens way to often.

I agree. It's a shame that

I agree. It's a shame that such things happen. But you can be grateful for what they have done and appreciate the memories.

I have never seen Lucas, and I will correct that soon, but I am sure that it is like so many of that time where what seemed like a straightforward movie turned into something memorable. Toy Soldiers, Breakfast Club, Ferris Beuller, Pump up the Volume (just barely), Heathers, the list goes on.
