I didn't hate this remake as much as every other critic out there. It repeats scenes, lines, characters, scares - you name it. But I kind of expected that given the title and genre, so I still found it entertaining enough. It squeaks by with 3 out of 5.FULL REVIEW

Jackie Earle Haley
Was his performance good? Since Watchmen, he's on my list of favorite actors. I've been interested in this movie, even though we all know the original was the best, and all the sequels should be disregarded. The thing that really made me wanted to see it was the back story the trailer showed about him being chased down, and if they showed some of the stuff about him being a pedophile....Yeah, I said it. I wanted to watch a movie for the pedophile parts. Only because I heard it was a reasonable and actually good backstory for the character that wasn't ever full explained. I read some stuff about how he took one of the girls as a kid to his magic cave or something like that.
Child molestor vs just child murderer
I'm a big fan of the NIghtmare series. Wes Craven's original idea of Freddy was of a pedophile, but society in the 80's was not prepared to accept that concept (neither producers). For me, Freddy was allways a pedophile. The idea fits better for the character development, the argument of the story and the plots. It's a lot more scary for the teenagers that his worst nightmare had allready abused of them when they were little kids. But thta's all this remake offers as new material. The rest is repetition. The new place this instalment proposes where Freddy is killed (the factory instead of his house in the same Elm Street) was not good for me. The fact that they made him a child molestor (the type that seems frinedly and funny to play with) doesn't mean they had to make him a running pussy and a begger-for-his-life. Freddy was all bad ass and cruel and very sadist before being killed by the parents, not anly in the dreamworld. I understand for a pedophile to be succesful he need to be accepted by kids in the first place, show some sensitivity and soft kind sides (although fakes), but not a crybaby. This leaves his revenge as an act of pain because "he was hurt and not understood". NO, NO NO. Freddy's revenge over Elm Street teens is because he was angry, mad and bloodthirst. The concept of micro naps was good, never explained scientifically in the previous ones although the teens allways fall asleep anywhere after days of avoiding sleeping.I wonder how will work this new Freddy and they new background if the story progresses with all we alreaddy know. His adoptive dad (or mom, who knows how sicker can this turn up) abused of him, and maybe that's why he became like that? Remember Freddy had a daughter? (Yes, perfect for his pedophilia) Cen he posses his victims and control them in the real world? (imagine he possesing a teen with little brothers) Can he invade just Elm Street teen dreams or all Springwood ones? Where are Freddy's bones? (The factory where he is killed this time works nice as the Car Junk Yard from the originals) Amanda Krueger, any ideas? Westin HIlls hospital? Hipnocill? The dream demons? New posibilities for sequels. I hope they do better than this one.
Yes...sort of.
I agree that Jackie Earle Haley is one of the best character actors out there. I think Watchmen was the role of a lifetime for him though and really showcased his talents. Freddy is really just a long string of one liners. But he had great presence and was plenty creepy. SPOILERSYes, they explore the pedophile thing more. Parts of that exposition were well done, parts were just ridiculous. One glaring error is that you never really doubt Freddy's innocence, which it appears the film kind of wants you to. Someone should have explained this to the editor though, and then he might not have shown little girls with scratches and the scene with Freddy licking Nancy, BEFORE the big reveal. I have to say, and lots of critics hate this about the new film, the expansion of the pedophile story added a whole level of nastiness that the previous movies didn't have. Imagine the extra level of dirty added to classic lines like, "I'm your boyfriend now" and the tongue licking when you know he molested her as a child. It's kind of icky, but yes, it IS more back story on Freddy...for better or worse. ;) Oh, and as a side note, I don't know if I'm part of the crowd that thinks the original is "better." It wins simply because it had the idea first, but as a film, well it's pretty cheesy too. I giggle at some of these forum threads on IMDB that are saying the original had better acting and more character development. I think maybe they have a too "perfect" memory of the original. :)
probably should have done separate reply, but w/e
I agree about the original being cheesy. But pretty much every old school horror movie was just so silly by todays standards that they just make me laugh. A lot. Especially (in the original because I haven't seen JEHs performance and I watched the original like, a week ago) in chase scenes and the first death. xDOh it was just SO silly watching Freddy run after that girl! (i stopped watching after the boyfriend was caught by the police because I didn't want to keep watching the silliness)But also, what movie from 'back in the day' didn't drag out the tension?
Scary
I feel like a sucker everytime they remake a movie from my childhood cause you know I'll go see it. I remember The first scaring my pants off and I look for that thrill when a new movie comes out. It is becoming harder and harder to get that thrill. I hope this doesn't disappoint, at least with the scares. George Romero has a new Zombie thriller coming out. Zombies always gives me the creeps. I hope you get a chance to review that film. I'll be looking. thanx
