Is anyone excited about this years nom's for the Oscars? I usually yell "booooo!" at the whole thing every time, but was curious what everyone's picks were. or your feelings in general.

I need to see many more movies before I get too excited about it...so far, there's nothing that I'm passionate about, really.
So, who's up for going to the movies with me? D
Oscar Shmoscar
ME! I watched the trailer for Pan's Labrynth yesterday and that movie looks crazy cool! I wish i had watched Babel when it was still in theaters too.
Oscar Shmoscar
We can still catch Babel in the theaters in Dallas....
I am always excited about the Academy Awards. I usually have at least one movie that I'm passionate about and this year it is DEFINITELY Children of Men. I think it should sweep all three of its nominations, especially cinematography!
I'm disappointed in several other categories, but oh well, I usually am. I have to admit I've become more cynical about this award show in recent years...mostly due to a certain friend of mine. :)

Just another reason why Dallas rocks that much more than anywhere else.
I'm not a big fan of the academy awards honestly. Personally I think they give too many away to people because of their past work and pass over a lot of the lesser known actors/movies who truly deserve it. My theory is it takes at least 3 great movies and a crapload of ass kissing to get an oscar.
Although I haven't seen many of the nominee's, I heartily agree with Little Red that Children of Men completely deserves every award it gets. I'll read about it later, but I won't watch the ceremony.

I saw Pan's Labryinth last night. I still don't know what i think about it. It's pretty amazing, but it's not perfect. I think their sfx person was lazy because sometimes sounds clearly did not fit. (like a horse trotting at a slow speed and the sound of galloping hoofs in the background) Other than that it was pretty good. It does have one of the most effective villans i've seen in a film in a while.
Also, this film has some sudden strong violent/scary moments, so your kids will probably grow up a notch after seeing this one. just a warning.
But i would guess other films deserve the oscar more than this one.

I'm horrible at guessing Oscar winners. It's amazing actually. But every year my wife and I bet on who can guess the most winners. I think she must know someone at Price Waterhouse Cooper... because she's always dead on while I'm not even sure who'll take home the lifetime achievements.
We're competative. It can get very spirited.
I can't wait... But at the same time I also know that I'll be annoyed at the Academy for about three and half weeks afterwards.

I've been pretty against the Academy ever since the year of Moulin Rouge. And then the subsequent Chicago sweep the year after. ?
And yet, I watch. I can't help it...it sucks me in! Or, it just sucks. I can't tell.

I lost faith when Saving Private Ryan lost to Shakespeare in Love. yet, I too seem to always watch despite my irritation.

This is EXACTLY where I lost faith in the awards. Again, I still watch them, but I believe that is the moment they turned sour for me.
I like Buck's idea to make them competitive. that could spice things up!

I told you all I was bad at picking the winner. From the Little Miss Sunshine Review...

That's amazing to me.
For a guy that's obsessed with film, you'd think I could get one or two right every now and then. Nope. Never. It's truly amazing.
Oscar Shmoscar
yeah, i figured the way they were putting her on stage and presenting an award, as well as just the way the rest of the show seemed to be somewhat predictable, I thought she was going to win as well.
Oscar Shmoscar
Well, we made it competitive this year too and it definitely made my husband WAY more interested! :)
In the end, we tied...we both got 10 right, which I thought was pretty good.
My BIGGEST disappointment is that Children of Men did not win Best Cinematography. This is an injustice on par with Moulin Rouge to me. That film did things with the camera that blew me away.

My favorite part was the look on the audience's face when Ennio Morricone started his acceptance speech for the lifetime achievement award.
Before Clint Eastwood started translating everyone was stunned with an expression like "What the in the wor... is that Borat?"
And I love that Ennio would speak for quite a few minutes and then Clint would simply translate "He says thank you." What a guy that Clint.

My favorite part (besides the mega trippy dancers that formed things...are we SURE they weren't CG?) was the Jack Black and Will Ferrell duet. Totally awesome, and very true. I really wish there was an Academy Award for those guys! LOVED the ridiculous wig. LOVED the special attention for Helen Mirren, too. Pretty cool!
Oh yeah, I also really enjoyed the Ellen photograph with Clint Eastwood taken by Stephen Spielberg.
You know, as frustrated as they make me, I'd still give my left arm to go to the Oscars and see all that in person. *sigh* maybe someday!
Oscar Shmoscar
are you sure will farrel was wearing a wig? or were you talking about something else?
Oscar Shmoscar
NO WAY...was that Will's real hair? shock
Oscar Shmoscar
yeah...I think it might be his real hair. He's got some crazy hair in his next movie, Blades of Glory.
That was my favorite part of the show too BTW!!
And yes, I would give just about anything to go myself. Come on short films!!! WE can do it! (I liked that guys speech by the way...about short films being made for pennies) :)
Oscar Shmoscar
Yeah, his speech was pretty inspiring. We can do it! We can do it! P
