This short was one of the most intimidating shorts to take on. Since the star trek series is pretty locked tight when it comes to room for error, and the latest movie flawlessly removes all past star trek films all together creating a brand new star trek legacy, there was very little to point out without bringing on the wrath of... well... Khan. We wanted to keep the focus on the 2009 movie, we wanted it to be funny, and it had to be made in 3 weeks. So what do you do when the movie is extremely well made already? Just have fun with it. That's the most basic answer. This short turned out to be one of my most favorite if not THE favorite short we've created. As I said in previous updates, I've been a fan of the Star Trek series since I was a kid, and I knew after we made the star wars short that a Trek short HAD to be made one day. Thankfully JJ Abrams helped kick off the Star Trek saga again and gave me the opening I've been waiting for for a long long time. But enough about that lets talk about the short.Originally I had plans to make every character a different actor, because lets face it, I don't even like hearing myself all the time, so I'm sure you guys don't either. However, since there was such a time crunch and since schedules didn't really work out, I ended up being EVERY male voice in the whole thing, Stephanie plays Uhura of course. So I'm kind of bummed that didn't work out, but at the time I was just flying as fast as I could creating all of the content I didn't really have time to focus on replacing the voice overs.Problems faced in the actual animation process: How do you simulate the handheld 3d environment that is the bridge of the enterprise when all of your drawings are flat? Very carefully. The bridge is a circular shape and Abrams likes to spin and shake and dolly the camera all around in his movies, so if we didn't even try to make it have a hand held look with lens flares and shaky cameras it wouldn't be right. So I had to do some clever moving of objects here and there to create the "look" of a circular room, but in actuality, it's all flat. Another challenge was sound design. Star Trek Sound FX aren't exactly royalty free, and they aren't a breeze to simulate either. But I'm proud to say most of the sounds in the short are home made. Explosions and beeps and alarms, those all came from Soundtrack, but the sounds of the ship, and the rumbling of the enterprise were all created here. If you saw how some of them were made you'd laugh. Seriously, sometimes is just me going "BEEEEEEEEeeeeeewwwuuuuuuuew" and other times its a cardboard box with smaller boxes inside being shook around.Luckily our music is far more professionally made :) but the music was a no cake walk for this short either. One thing music can do for your video is point out where your writing drags on, and with animation that can be a huge hazard. We actually removed a joke completely (which can be found in our Exclusive Content) to shorten the over all timing. Creating a suspenseful-non-repetitive score was a big test for the edit as well as the composer. So I am extremely pleased with the final product. That's about all I can remember. if you have any questions feel free to ask below. I hope you guys liked it. And in case anyone thinks I'm a huge Vader Hater now, let me just reassure you that I am not. Anyone who knows me knows my love for Star Wars. :)

Nice!
I'm totally with you on this, this is in fact my favorite HISHE short of all time, it's going to be hard to beat. Funny thing is, is that up untill Vader showed up which was probably the most perfect joke you could make with this, I actually felt like this could of have been a scene in the movie!
Oh man..
It's always me pointing out continuity errors, hey i'm an editor! ...But even after all the Red Shirts have been thrown off the ship Uhura is still on board! However IT IS Uhura so I don't really mind :) and then again, when I think about it. None of us should really mind.
Star Wars!
As a Star Wars fan, I give it 5/5 medachlorians!

right, right. I'm not a fan before but I resume on liking it coz my bf likes it very much.
I saw Kiddo!
I'm excited because I saw the doggy cameo and arriving in Star Wars was a better idea than Babylon 5. Oh, and fantastic job on the voice track too. Please please please please could you post a wallpaper of the redshirts tumbling out of the airlock? Transcending the Arse of Reason in time for last orders

3 weeks? Dude, I've been
3 weeks?Dude, I've been working on Wolverine for 2 and I got absolutely nothing. You did great cap. That art was so nice. I like that Kiddo was hanging out with Uhura. I like to think that i was one of the red shirts. the explosion / black hole never made sense to me either... so I'm glad you went with that (though I also always wondered why Nero didn't just go to Romulus to warn them of their impending doom... he had a hundred years or so to help them come up with a plan afterall). Absolutely hilarious script.By the way, In terms of voice work, this was actually my favorite so far. great imitations of everyone ... but none of them felt over the top. Great job. Congratulations.-CitizenBuck
By the way, speaking of star
By the way, speaking of star trek / wars... has everyone seen R2D2 in Star Trek? You have, haven't you? If not... you can see him floating through space right after the enterprise arrives at Vulcan and scratches the saucer on the debris of another ship. he's flying by on the lower left corner of the monitor.-CitizenBuck
woa!
What is R2D2 doing in Star Trek?has Star Wars and Star Trek finally come to a peace settlement? (of course, not!)
Man, I hate to even say it
Man, I hate to even say it because I know you'll say "oh man you totally should have!" but I almost put an R2 in the redshirts/spare parts shot. I just skipped it because I didn't know if anyone would even notice or get the easter egg. Also the cross over at the end might not be as funny if it was noticed before you knew what was going to happen. Oh well :) I'm glad others know about the R2 Unit. To Answer your question Animal, ILM has apparently been putting R2D2 in effects shots as easter eggs in their recent movies. I learned about this when the Star Trek director commentary pointed out that "something was in the shot" but they wouldn't say what it was. It didn't take long to google it and find the screenshot. They've been doing stuff like this for years, just not always with R2, it is usually star wars related though :) Also, thanks for the positive feedback guys. Your response so far has been very encouraging.
Awesome.
It.. is...awesome!!!!.... I couldn't stop laughling . Keep the great work.!!!!
Cap is awesome
I loved the jokes in this and I LOVED Cap's voice work...the characters were so right on. Best voices yet. So great! My second favorite HISHE of all time!
I'm in love you with all
I'm in love you with all over again. This is the first hishe since spiderman to make me laugh out lound, all your other videos made me smile and do a chuckle but this cracked me up :). Also your voices are brilliant! I always wonder if your that good at impressions or you change them a little bit after recording.Instant classic.
The best one yet.
Dude, I LOVED it! Easily the best one you've done yet. This one is going to be extremely hard to top. And in just 3 weeks? Phenominal! Keep them coming!
Abso-freakin-lutely!
Awesome job on this short - I loved the little quips Spock made in each sceen "But we're in space, weight has nothing to do wi..." - Wonderful! I couldn't stop laughing! :EDIT: I also love Bones' line - a fitting cameo for my favorite original Star Trek member. Keep up the good work!
I have to say that this is
I have to say that this is my new favorite HISHE short. I've loved HISHE ever since I saw your LOTR clip, and with each one the jokes have gotten better. Keep it up!
Steady as she goes...
... that is to say, Cap, if you keep up this level of production, you guys are *really* going to go places. That short is fantastic. I think part of it is that you know the universe inside and out, so you were able to hit a lot of notes very organically as you told the story - inside jokes, quips, pokes, etc. You captured the movie as well, and your spin on it is brilliant - loved the twist at the end. The voicework is masterful. In recent shorts, we hear your voice a fair bit, and so I'm glad you want to include other voices in the future, but in this one? You totally pulled it off - each of the voices is unique and unrecognizable as you. Oh - and as always, the art is just beautiful. You and your teammates should be really proud of your work. It's been so cool to see you get better and better with each release. Keep doing what you love.P.S. Check this out - was just poking around a bit... today this short made video of the day on Slashfilm - and was re-blogged a number of places, like scificool.com. Congrats!
P.S. -- P.R.
Postscript: I'm happy to say that I had a group of people over to watch Star Trek, and afterward I showed them ST:HISHE - they loved it - every one of them. So know that HISHE has some new fans out there...
Best Short Yet
Agreed. This is by far the best spoof you have made. I hope they just keep getting funnier!
uhura wears a red shirt
uhura wears a red shirt
I pointed that out long ago
I pointed that out long ago
Technically...
So we got a lot of this on Youtube too. Uhura is not wearing a red shirt. She is wearing a red dress...and technically the term is "red SHIRT." :)
