Transformers: Dark of the Moon is a tough movie to review. On the one hand, I don't want to say it's better than Transformers 2, like that's some sort of compliment that should make you all run out and see it. On the other hand, as critical as I am of Transformers 2, I think some critics out there need some perspective. This is a Michael Bay movie based on transforming robot toys from the 1980s. With that in mind, I actually thought it was pretty darn good. I mean it's not a great, ground breaking film, but if you're thinking, "hey, I'd like to go see that movie about alien robots that turn into cars and big freaking guns... you know, the ones kids play with," then I feel like you'll be pretty happy.FULL REVIEW

Phew!
I did thought you were gonna hate it, I wouldn't have like that. It's a fun film, but still don't understand the hate for the last one, and I never will since I absolutely loved this one!Did you see it in 3D?
3D Fail and Transformers HISHE
I saw it in 3D but i forgot to take my glasses (i own 3 pairs) and i didnt have enough moneys to buy another.Luckily a went with a friend who did have the Glasses so i got to watch a few scenes in 3D and it looked amazing!Q/A 4 Tina: did daniel see it with you? i read his rant but i thought he might have changed his mind. if he did, what did he think? will you guys make a Transformers 3 HISHE
I have to say first I
I have to say first I haven't seen T3 yet and nor do I want to.I don't think you can defend a bad movie by saying "it's just a bit of fun" and "Oh it's a Michael Bay film". The reason why is I have a minuim set of standards for a film, like engaging story and developed characters. However I'm not looking for a oscar winning movie here but just something I can sit and watch with out cringing. To me, to say "It's robots bashing each other! just enjoy it", is a poor defensive for what might be a bad movie, a movie can't be fun just it's robots hitting each. I know it's a Michael Bay film and if you go to see his movies then you know what you paid for and I know he isn't the best story teller, but there is anything wrong with asking for a tighter plot and strong acting performance. Wow, that was gouchy. I don't attend to sound gouchy but I feel it dooesn't make any sense to defend a bad movie with it's just a bit of fun. I don't mind if your defending a bad movie with a level argument, but it's just a bit of fun argument is weak.:)
Totally understand
I totally understand Ness. I hate that arguement too, and I'm sorry it came across that way. It's not so much that I'm using the "bit of fun" arguement to say the movie is a great film. It's more of an expectation thing. I feel like people shouldn't go see a movie they KNOW is made by Michael Bay, based on TOYS, and expect incredibly deep story telling. I just think that's unrealistic. That does NOT mean the film gets a free pass to just be total crap either. What I'm saying is, if you like to see some amazing action and effects (something I think Bay excels at despite his numerous other flaws), then T3 actually has a decent storyline (with even a little bit of excellence in a few moments) and good enough character development that I can enjoy the whole film. You could use the "bit of fun" arguement with T2 and it would fall flat because the plot holes were big enough to drive Optimus through (parts of it literally make no sense), the cheesy comic relief was unbearable (mom on pot brownies? really?), and the characters where horrible (and some even disappeared during the movie). So I couldn't have a bit of fun with the action, I just wanted the terrible thing to end.I guess I just feel like the overly harsh reviews for this film seem a little ridiculous to me. And again, I gave it 3 out of 5 stars, so it's not like it's going on my top ten list or anything. :)
My piece
I've already laid out my comment on this movie on Daniel's rant. It's on page 3, and I don't feel like retyping it atm (it's 2 in the morning, lol), but my main argument is that based on plot synopsis and and plot elements, it sounds like to me all Bay and his scriptwriters did was rehash the plot of Revenge of the Fallen and make a slightly improved version of it. That being said, even if it were 10 times better than Fallen, I still wouldn't see it. I pay money to see something original, not a rehash, even if it's a good rehash. It's like Superman Returns. Is it a good movie? Yes! It is! But the problem with Superman Returns is that it essentially is a remake of Superman while trying to be a sequel. It's even worse here because the second one was horrible, and a rehash of a horrible movie is not what fans really want. It's certainly not what I or my brother (both of us were original fans) wanted out of this movie. Not to mention, what I find sad is that the original movie from the 80s had downers (such as Prime's death) due to the poor idea of killing off Autobots to make room for a new toyline, yet even so, there was still such strong emotion to it that despite those downers, you loved how scenes played out with Ironhide and Prime dying at the hands of Megatron's cruelty and cowardice. Bay has yet to respect that (if anyone would like, I'll pull up a recent Facebook quote of mine that sums up Bay's treatment of the Transformers franchise).Anyways, that's my rant.
Actually, I think the 'bit
Actually, I think the 'bit of fun' argument is by it self valid. When used on this movie though...I'll bring up another movie that is 'just a bit of fun': Kung Fu Hustle. Mind, its one of my favourite movies. Does it have a good story? Its got a clichéd bad guy to good guy+zero to hero formula but there is little to no execution put in it (there's a bit but not much). Does it have a good cast? Well there's Stephen Chow who is great of course, and some of his old time colleagues but besides that he literally picked people up from the streets to play support roles. So not that much. Does it need the previous two? Hell no! The constant action, the fact that something is always happening, the way they shot the whole thing... Its just moving all the time! Its not something you want to think on, sure! But its doing the mind turn off right! Now to Transformers:It does it right too!... At times. At times it has action, which is awesomely made. At times it has epic shots, which is also good... Then it takes the action scenes and makes it 20+ minutes long with a constant level of action. An action scene can last long when the situation is escalating, that's why Die Hard isn't dead yet. But when you start off at the top you just don't have anywhere to go. You get 5 minutes of WHOA then afterwards, its still an action scene but even the WHOA stuff seem less... 'Whoa'. Hell, by the point the fallen leader died I was bored. Which brings me to another thing: If your movie's plot is 'Two groups of huge robots that can transform battling it out' don't spend the first 60 minutes establishing some kid's life. In the first moive, it was fine, we got to know a new character that fans never saw before. We don't need to repeat that in the second one. My problem here is not that we get to see what happens to our 'human hero', my problem is that its way too long. Everything that happens in that first act could be done in about 10 minutes! Hell, I always bring this up: Up did in the first 5 minutes what other (bad) movies try to do in 120.Michael Bay wouldn't be a bad director in my opinion... He just really needs to finally find out what kind of movie he's trying to make because its just a mess. Also, since a... 'Friend' of mine forced me into going and watching transformers 3 with him, I have just one thing to say: 'The Needs of the Many DO NOT out weight the needs of the few when you're talking about enslaving and sending a species into at least partial extinction.' EDIT: I didn't even mention the twins or Megan Fox or the mechansticles, because to be quite honest: I didn't really care about those. They didn't really bug me. I was half asleep by the mechansticles anyway.EDIT2: 90% comes from those who went to see it despite critics aka: Who saw something in the series that I can't seem to find despite 2 movie and critics. Since I admit it is an upgrade from the second movie, its probably more like a 100%-10% on people who claim to have seen it. Ather lenoro' sharanteh! (Ather's light guide us!)"Food for thought!"
Amen to that-
ok, I agree (for the most part) on what you are saying- it is just a bit of fun! yes the second movie was way underdeveloped, which is one reason people hated it. but that doesn't make it a bad movie!!!- btw the HISHE of it is totally right: so let me get this straight, some dude named The Fallen, (kinda dumb name btw)the "most powerful" decepticon ever, can only be defeated by a prime, and then MEGATRON KILLS ONE!!! how does that not make him more powerful?? anyway, back to the matter at hand: i realize that another reason people hate the second and third transformers movies because they are too unrealistic. um, HELLO?? think about it: if you are going to call ANY movie bad because it is too unrealistic, then don't even bother going to see a movie about alien robots that magically turn into cars. seriously people, i mean come on! when did that become even slighlty realistic?!?!?! but i don't care about these things, because it is just a friggen movie!!! it is unrealistic, BECAUSE IT IS NOT REAL!!! i thought all three transformers movies were awesome!! they are on my list of the best movie series' of all time- the others are STAR WARS, JURASSIC PARK, STAR TREK, TERMINATOR, PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN, HARRY POTTER, and INDIANA JONES (btw that list was not in any particular order of favorites). none of those are even REMOTELY realistic! anyway, if you are one of those snooty people that don't like unrealistic movies, you seriously need to watch this video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-D_xPnq6onEit is called: IF MOVIES WERE REAL. it shows you how retarded movies would be if they were realistic (it also makes comedy out of the topic- it is hilarious!) well that's all i have to say. thnx for reading.
Yeah "unrealism" is the bad
Yeah "unrealism" is the bad word, I agree. (Quick side thought: Only being destroyable by a prime doesn't mean anyone who destroys a Prime is better than him. It can mean any number of things, from Transformer prophesies to only that sword thingie being able to cut trough his armour.) (Back to main note:)I think the unrealism is mainly meant at the plot development not its main object (transforming cars and aliens waging a war on Earth). That is redeemable. Heck, even more ridiculous things have gained incredible amounts of critical acclaim. (For example: What is up with the two office desk in Gilliam's Brazil? Realistically there would either be two half desks or the guy in the other office would have dragged the entire desk to his side long ago. It does however demonstrate a (poetically over-shot) criticism on greediness in business.) However there is no reason why the military wouldn't have used that super ship a lot earlier in the film (or why it wouldn't have reused it in the third). There is no reason why they should show us a physics professor who obviously should sport a Fedora and a whip seeing from the audiences reaction, who (Unlike everybody's favorite Professor) doesn't get a chance to close our eyes to his over the top-ness by injecting us with an overdose of awesome while also going Gordon Freeman on the Decepticons. (Okay, that is less unrealism but seriously if that guy can say three lines about science and turn on all women in a class of about 100... THAT is someone you want to keep on screen.)So main point is: Unrealism comes from people acting incompetent and not from the general idea. Its like those "Uncovering" videos on Youtube about NASA releasing "fake" photos (the ones which are optical illusions mostly). They walk by the point that if NASA would want to fake something, they have the ability to fake it good. And not acknowledging that fact makes their claims unrealistic. Ather lenoro' sharanteh! Transformers 3
I agree Entirely. Considering Michael Bay never seems to be a good story teller, he really pulled it up this time. To tell you the truth, I think he got REALLY lucky with the first one. In this film, however, there was defiantly alot more dialogue between the robots and we weren't left with background autobots (Like Jolt, even though he played a very important role in Optimus' revival) getting no dialogue, although neither he nor the twins appeared in this film without so much as an explanation. What bugged me the most was that Megatron recieved almost no face time and his last battle with Optimus lasted five seconds and then Optimus just excecuted an unarmed Sentinal, not his character.Overall, a great movie for movie-goers , but not so much a fan film.
By reading you're reveiw
I have not seen the movie yet and have decided to wait till it comes out on DVD. Does anyone know when that is? Anywho, it very dissapointing to me that some many thing have gone downhill. I belive they didn't give Megatron face time cause he didn't have much of a face left. At least they FINNALLY kill of Starscream. He's such an a$$. Oh yeah, did Daniel go and see it too?Cybre-Lee"I am here to save your world, not just their's. I have come..."
on dvd
It comes out on DVD September 30th. You're welcome.
well i watched the movie and
well i watched the movie and perrsonally i dissliked, its not that the story was dissapointing but it felt like too much CGI, sometimes movies could be good with just a little bit of CGI. I think that i watched many movies that was actualy better
Totally agree with you!
Dark of the Moon is not the piece of crap that the seconed one was, but still feels like Micheal Bay is just playing with his Transformers toys for 2 hours. Not that this is nesaceraly a bad thing. I have thought of the entire series as being fan films with a hundred million dollars behind them. I must say though, I think Micheal Bay could easily be a bit ADD. THe movies really just a bunch of funny skits with explosians continiuasly going off in the background. I think that your review is spot on. P.s. Can't wait to see what you do with Harry Potter! The 7th part 2 was AMAZING!
What the..?
Great review. There are two things that really bugged me in these movies. In the second movie they gave the robots breath, as in when its cold and your breath condenses, and then in the third one when they died pretty much each one spewed out what really looked like blood. I mean common, they're robots! why are they trying to make them more human?
I know how to answer this
Yeah, well, they're robots that turn into cars. What happens if you shoot a car? Stuff(like gas or oil or brake fluid) leaks out. But the breath? That I can't understand. Steam from the motor or smoke maybe?Cybre-Lee"I am here to save your world, not just theirs. I have come..."
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
I thought this movie was awesome, but I still like the first one just a tad bit more. The 3D, visual effects, and action sequences were truly amazing and the acting was very good. I did find it rather long, and, at times, a little drawn out, but the action really helped keep me on the edge of my seat. I was a little disappointed by all the language and the innuendo, but, all in all, I still found this movie very worth while.
