Hi guys

I'm an avid watcher of howitshouldhaveended.com videos, but now I find I cannot view some of them (the new Beowulf one, for example). I now get "This video is not available in your country.". I live in the UK so I can only imagine that other people in the Uk cannot watch them?
this seems to be related to YouTube's region locking mechanism.

Just thought I'd give you a heads up.

Hmmm... idk... the only time I get that notice is on some of Mark Kermode's movie reviews...

I asked a friend to look at the same vids and he gets the same issue.

Oh.
I hadn't noticed before. I wonder if this is anything to do with Youtube's recent dispute with the Performing Rights Society in the UK? It really annoys me when this sort of thing happens - I couldn't see the Superbowl adverts Cap linked to on Hulu because I am geographically challenged. They were just adverts for products I can also get here - wtf?

Maybe there is a "Rest of World" button on Youtube that needs to be pushed back at Hishe HQ?

I have found a way around this: use a proxy server based outside the UK. For example proxy24.com

As for the reason why all of this is happening I think that you are right, although it seems daft to put a blanket ban on, locking the UK out of *any* non-UK videos :(

what the heck! is a proxy sever?

Jamesbloke's picture

It's a kind of internet PO Box which relays information between your computer and a website - most commonly used by companies and schools so that all internet traffic comes to a central point, the proxy server, to be checked for unsuitable material before being forwarded on to the computer that requested it.

There are also public web proxy servers which is what banedon was referring to. These make surfing more anonymous - either by obfuscating the details of the site you are looking at to get round your local computer security or to make you anonymous to the site you are visiting (as in hide your UK IP address so you can watch Youtube).

I used to use one to get round the block placed on the HISHE forum by my IT department at work, but they have now blocked that too.

I looked into the account settings and cant find anything about setting it to global. It should already be that way. I'll keep looking.

I've listed the videos I can watch and those that generate "you're in the wrong country" message:

These can be played:
Superman - ZLNNwR0V-Pg
Starwars - PjpaKcloXno&feature=related
Sipderman 3 - EJfY5IqgcOY
Lord of the Rings - TxrUsA9lrwM&feature=related
Willwonker - fXOAQ_8huZU
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - WvVYsHJlycM

These CANNOT be played:
Dead Man's Chest - EvU6nVlhGAU
The Matrix - EvU6nVlhGAU
Saving private Ryan - zRQG7EqKeo
Underworld - D994722733493BC6
Seven - D994722733493BC6
Braveheart - D994722733493BC6
Beowulf - D994722733493BC6

I've listed them with the Youtube suffix (I cannot post URL's - not enough posts yet :)). Hope this helps.

Time to hassle YouTube.

So sorry guys! I've contacted YouTube to figure out what's up. We'll let you know when they resolve...but just a warning, they aren't speedy at these kinds of things. Thanks for letting us know!

ness's picture

A way to get round this is then try meatacafe or some other video hostiing site that host hishe videos, you tube is not the only place to watch hishe :)

I still would like to know whats with all the fuss with youtube and this "this video is not available in your country" thing.

Daniel's picture

The source of the issue has been figured out. Should have the settings corrected soon.

This should be fixed now. If someone from Europe could verify that would be great. I really appreciate you letting us know as this was an error that YouTube had made and we would have never known.

FYI, banedon, the particular links to the videos you were able to watch were actually other youtube users who had posted us without our permission. Those will probably be down sometime today. But all 19 of our videos should now be viewable EVERYWHERE under our account: hishedotcom

Thanks!
