Twilight the film is not as great as it could have been. But it also stayed pretty true to the source...and keep in mind, the source was a book written for 15 year old girls. I give it 3 out of 5.

I really want to geek out more about this movie. I hope at least SOMEONE else saw it.

Comments:

.... *sigh* I saw it too. I didn't want to but I was forced to go by my bestfriend's wife who is almost 30 and loves the book. Halfway through the movie she leans to me and whispers "This movie is F@#$ing terrible". I think her negative reaction to the movie was largely contributed to by all of the teenagers who were giggling at peices of dialouge that they thought were funny but were actually supposed to be dramatic or romantic or ... something other than funny.

I agree with the review that Bella and edward falling in love within 3 minutes of knowing each other was a bit too soon. From what I could tell a large part of the movie's plot has to be dependant on the understanding that Bella and Edward are madly in love and can't live without eachother. Sadly there just isn't enough going on in the movie to make you believe that which then makes it harder to buy into the extrodinary lengths that the charachters have to go through later in the movie.

I also could have done without Edward being awkward, nervous, shy to such a high degree especially concidering that he has gone through the highschool thing for the past 80 years. And why the F does any of those kids still go to Highschool. They look old enough to be at least 18 and not have to go to school. Oh, and here's a thought, what about home schooling? There's no reason for those kids to put up an act and go to school and risk being exposed as vampires just so they can learn algebra for the 20th time. That part just annoyed me.

I'm a huge fan of vampires. I write about vampires and am working on getting published so as the genre goes (there is actually a vampire genre shocker eh?) I'm pretty easy to please. Typically I mock the movies regardless of how good they are since its just one of those subjects no one takes seriously or puts much effort into so quality hardly touches these types of movies and books.  Having said all that this movie was horrid. I actually didn't mind the production value, seemed ok with me but I tend to only harp on the visuals if they're actually painful to watch. It did help that I ADORE the pacific-north west and plan to move there so every time there was an outdoor scene I squealed softly with glee... that's about the only nice thing I can say. I haven't read the books, and never intend to. Have read recaps though and goodness its fun to read about people mocking those books! I'm almost greatful for Ms. Myers shitting out this horrid series just for all the snark people throw at it. Onto my actual feelings of the story itself. Beyond it being one of the most cliche on the modern vampire mythos, unattainable love blah blah blah I don't have a problem with that. Original ideas are hard to come by but some effort to make it stand apart from all the other identical plots would have been appreciated. A far greater crime is committed by the writer for having the romance make little to no sense and rely purely on author whim. Ms. Myers wanted them to be in love so they were in love. Development? Pffft who needs that. Characterization? Overblown! Its a sad statement when the two leads actually like each other romantically in real life (that's what the super market tabloids tell me!) have no chemistry when actually playing their roles. They seem to suffer from constipation or some other mild irritation when they see each other, not love, not affection, not even a mild sense of enjoyment for the others company. Vampires playing baseball = dumb. Vampires who sparkle instead of bursting into flames when in the sunlight = really really dumb. There was hardly any plot to the movie and the female lead, Bella, is completely unlikable. She acts like some kind of martyr outcast despite the fact everyone is throwing themselves at her to be her friend or date her. Her clumsiness is clearly intended as some kind of flaw and to make her seem cute but comes across more like a deity has a vendetta against her and just wishes her dead. The few times she spends with normal people she's typically just ignoring everyone else or staring intently at Edward like she's trying to solve a sudoku puzzle located on his head.  Sure Edward is bloody gorgeous and I wouldn't kick him out of my bed but being pretty is hardly a compelling enough reason to like a person let alone a fictional character you're spending time with. He's emo, broody and all around too dramatic. When effort is made to make him seem mysterious he just comes across as a jerk. The fact he falls for Bella based primarily on her smell (LAME) and not on anything like... her personality... shared interests... or heck anything that is the foundation of the most basic of relationships. I have an endless list of gripes because of this movie and the books but one of my biggest issues is the message is sends to and says about girls. It suggests strongly that without a man a woman is incomplete that love is an addiction and somehow intrinsically harmful instead of being anything positive.  Christ I only saw this because my friend was moving away and wanted to see it... the things we do for love.

I haven't seen it yet...I really was trying to stay totally shielded from anything Twilight until I could get to the theater. All I knew was vampires and love (AWESOME)! But then I heard the awful truth--that it's a teen movie. So now I just can't bring myself to go see it.

Ahh well...I suppose it will be a DVD rental for me. :)

Biglazy -
I agree about the teenagers in the theater. The thing is, I had insanely LOW expectations for this movie. I read a lot and see a great deal of the books I've read made into movies. Its an understatement that, sadly, the films never seem to get it right. I didn't expect this to be an exception...in fact, I started reading the books after I knew it was going to be a movie and as I was reading I just didn't know how on earth they would portray this story on screen effectively. Pair all of that with the fact that its an angst riddled story about complicated teen love and I just knew it would suck.

So my average star rating is more of a, "hey, it didn't totally suck." I think they did do some things right. They added some surprising details from the book that they could have easily skipped over (Bella's clumsiness was a character trait that Kristen Stewart did a very good, subtle job of portraying). There were other scenes (mostly in the second half) that I really enjoyed as well.

It was hard for me to see it in such a low budget state though. That was the hardest part for me...it really felt kind of like a teen t.v. movie...and that's never going to help.

Yeah, this was something that the movie missed in the beginning, but Pattinson finally found his groove later. In the book Edward is incredibly charming...to everyone. He's not awkward and everyone just loves talking to him. He can charm anyone. The movie made him overly brooding. It was a bad mix that not only didn't play out effectively onscreen, but also made the "love" part harder to believe.

The reason they go to high school is because they don't age, and the younger they start out in a place, the longer they can stay. If they move to a new city and pretend to be 18...well, then they don't have quite as long. We let actors in their late 20s play high schoolers all the time, so why shouldn't vampires. :)
I suppose they could home school, but the reason they've chosen the "vegetarian" lifestyle is so that they can interact with other people. They don't really develop it much, but Carlisle (Edward's "dad") is the town doctor.

Yeah, I'll shut up now. ;)

Yeah the person I went to the movies with knew the books real well so she was able to explain some of the subtle book references that were going on, so I think that made it a little bit better for me. The weird part is that you mention it was low budget, although I read that the budget was 27 mil, which I thought would be enough for some better special effects. Maybe all of that money went into pale-ifying make up.

The one special effect I was really disapointed in was the sunlight sparkly scene. I really thought that they could have made that look much cooler and more unique/impressive. To me it just kind of looked like he had spilled some glitter on himself during art class.

Oh there was one other thing that I was curious about. I thought the tracker bad vampire that was after Bella was supposed to be crazy strong based off of what the black vampire (i wish i knew his name, but that's the only way i know how to discribe him) said. But the fight between Edward and the ponytail biker was kind of a let down. Did they play that up in the book more and make it more dramatic.

Oh and how do you kill vampires in this book series? Do you have to do the steak through the heart or can you just set them on fire or what do you have to do?

Part of me told me to see this movie. The other part of me which is my normal side, told me that it's a movie made for girls and I could care less.

At school All I hear is girls talking about this movie and the books.
So I try to be oppositional and say the movie is going to suck and they nearly gang up on me like I'm talking blasphemy.

I haven't seen the movie.

So what I want is somebody who has never opened the book in their life. Somebody who hasn't been looking forward to this movie for months now. And then I want that somebody to tell me what they thought of the movie...if it's not too much to ask =D

Yeah, the sad thing is 27 mil isn't really that much for a movie with heavy special effects (For example The Matrix had 65 mil, which is impressive considering what they did -- but Matrix Reloaded had a budget twice that!). It's not an "independent movie" budget though either, which is why I was a little caught off guard by how low the production value was on it. I'm not quite sure where they spent their money, but I wish it had been to hire some actors that were already fair skinned and blond, rather than dying the hair of brunettes and painting their faces. Silly.

I would like this too. I think it sounds like that was Biglazy's perspective. My brother-in-law saw it with my sister and was surprised that he kind of liked it. He didn't love it, but he expected to totally hate it. I think expectations here are key. ;)

Yeah i never read any of the books, so the only exposure I had to the subject matter prior to seeing the movie was just seeing the trailers on TV. I think Red's rating of 3 out of 5 stars is probably pretty close to how I would judge it. I would give it a lower rating if I was judging it solely on the production/acting/special effects/script etc... but for some odd reason I kind of got into the movie by the end. I think this was because of how the story portraited vampires differenty from the classic vampires (garlic, light, steak through the heart, evil) i'm use to in other movies. I also think that story arc (several future plot points for future movies were hinted at) could be pretty interesting as well.

Honestly, If someone else had directed this movie with a couple of different actors, I really think this movie could have been kind of bad ass. (This is exactly how I felt about "Smokin Aces" as well) Basically it's a movie that has a lot of potential but just never seems to get there.

SWfanatic09's picture

hmmm...well i'll go see it when it comes out in our $1.50 theater =D

Yes I am a guy and yes I saw this movie and again yes I read the books. Im rather surprised that none of you guys noticed the only major problem I had with this movie. The school was not well portrayed compared to the book. In the book the school had very little good vehicles and the only really good one was the cullens. This movie portrayed the school like more of a typical New York stereotype school. In the book it was more of an average Joe idea going on. But now I will talk about my favorite part of this. The fight scene. This scene was so well done. It looked good and fluid but not like the Star Wars prequels were it looks more like dancing. That is Yoda11s view on the new twilight movie. (And just as a side note I loved the books).

citizenbuck's picture

The guy from this movie came to a meeting i was in a week or two ago. I didn't get to meet or say hello to him personally, but I would've like to've. Seemed really uneasy with too much attention, but handled himself very well never the less. Good times. He had no idea what day of the week it was. I liked that about him.

Bliss's picture

I wonder if i'm the only one...I think that guy Robert Pattinson is ??ɬ?ber Fugly...

I know I'm a guy and all, but still I can't see why any chick would think he is so special...

SomeGirlOnTheNet's picture

LOL, yeah he is. I'm a girl, so not everyone wants to have his huge-foreheaded children.

babbzilla's picture

Ya know, I liked it... I found myself saying 'that wasn't in the book' or 'well in the book' that sorta thing, I hate doing that but I couldn't help it.

All in all the movie was very teenager-like... but if anyone had read the 4th book this saga ain't for teens. But when a book and movie that's in a high school setting I guess that'll happen.

All in all I liked the movie (I loved/ adored the books) but that's just me.

I can see where (to the peeps who read the book) people would say it was rushed, and I agree they left out a lot of the passion between Edward and Bella in the books (see there I go again).

But it was okay, to me. :)

I'm fairly certain that would count as discrimination in my country (to only pick pale people for pale roles).

Tina's picture

Ha! Yes, but over here in the states we can totally hire actors based on appearance. Sometimes there aren't any other factors that go into the decision. :) Case in point...Keanu Reeves and Milla Jovovich.

I was so afraid you were going to ream me for giving this movie 3 stars. ;) I've been a little afraid since it came out on DVD.

I just watched it. My eleven year old daughter loves it so I wanted to see what all the hub-bub was about. I gotta say that it wasn't very good. The story was thin and the acting atrocious. Going "Pffft" every 2 minutes and mumbling isn't acting. It's just annoying. The film quality looked as if it were a 1970s movie on a worn out video cassette that hasn't been digitally remastered. The direction was completely disjointed as if huge sections had been cut. Characters actions and dialogue made no sense from scene to scene. And worst of all, there was absolutely no chemistry between the leads. The special effects, if that's what you want to call them, weren't that impressive either. The makeup was laughable too. You could see where the pale line ended on the actors necks. Not to mention that no other body parts such as hands were made to look pale. The whole thing lacked a certain level of consistency. Even the hand held camera work didn't mesh with the rest of the footage. Everything about this movie distacted me from doing what a movie is supposed to do-- entertain. It just didn't draw me into their world. You want a good vampire/love story? Watch Buffy/Angel/Spike instead.

i totally agree. my personal experience has been similar; turning books to movies has always been kind of tricky because you can never be sure of what the readers expect out of the big screen adaptation of the story. Each reader has imagined the different scenes in their own different way so its always hard to cater to everyone's wishes of how the film should turn out.
and i totally agree with biglazy's comment about the way Bella and Edward manage to fall in love with each within barely 3 minutes of the movie. its utterly unrealistic and implausible. all in all, quite disappointing. only die-hard Robert Pattison fans should go watch it.

Twilight gets the next HISHE, huh?

Carp... now i've got to watch it. I was hoping I could get by without having seen this one.

Tina's picture

Yeah, it's probably the most popular request we get. I admire you're ability to avoid this movie so far. ;) Whatever your expectations are, lower them. Especially since you have no interest going in!

Now I only have a month to see it!

SomeGirlOnTheNet's picture

First off the good news. The music was fitting. I thought Kristen Stewart did a good job on playing Bella, in terms of copying the character in the book. And, despite popular belief, they didn't really alter any of the events; it was accurate to the book. They just left out some events, probably for time purposes. And a lot of the movies flaws were just flaws already in the book. Bad news. Can't say, as a girl, that I'm falling head over heels for Edward OR Jacob. Ed is insecure, and he HAS killed people (I don't care if he's a "heroin addict" it's still kind of a big turn off for me). Plus I wasn't really convinced he was 100 years old by the way he talked. Sorry Pat, not my first choice for Edward. Or my second. http://www.hulu.com/watch/107500/saturday-night-live-digital-short-firel...

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU...THE BOOK was A 1000 TIMES BETTER THAN THE MOVIE, AND YEAH, THE EFEECTS WHERE A LITTLE BAD....BUT A 3 OUT IF 5???I MEAN IT'S KIND OF HARSH DON'T YOU THINK?? I WOULD GIVE IT A 4 OR 4 1/2 AT LEAST...

citizenbuck's picture

Alright, I saw it finally. someone at work gave me a copy. Not to sound like that guy, but I'm a little rattled that people like the relationship between Edward & Bella as much as they do... the first moment he saw her he was drawn to her and he wanted to devour her. He isolated her from her friends and family... all in the name of protecting her... But the only real threat to her was either him or introduced to her by him (with the exception of the yokels at the prom dress shipping scene). This was a pretty typical abusive relationship... wasn't it? And i mean he full on stalked her ... breaking into her room and watching her sleep for weeks/month/whatever. maybe I'm reading too much into it... the acting was horrible... there's no telling what they were really trying to express. Still... 16 year old girls all over the place are going on and on about this lovely relationship... if this is the model they're using to define how a relationship should be... it could be a mess... but then again, my generation had the little dramas of the brat pack... and chuck & lady di... and meg ryan & dennis quaid...I'll shut up now. -CitizenBuck

If you don't take this movie too seriously, you should get a laugh out of this.  ;)

Now i absolutly loved the book i mean ive read it practically 15 times and i loved the movie the first time i read it but then after i saw it again i saw all the faults of it.i dont no how i didnt see them in the first time but i think it might have been the excitment of me getting the DVD.I hate Edward in the movie he's faw too socially awkward and your like what i thought he was charming. And i thought they fell in love far too quickly i mean one second hes just curious because he can't read her mind then he can't live without her.I think he was just so used to reading people's mind that when he couldnt read hers he automatically went hm.. well i dont know what shes thinking so il just fall for her because it will be a challenge. But i think Edward was more believable in New Moon but i think Bella forgave him far too quickly because he caused her so much pain and it was so ironic because she finally accepts she could learn to love Jacib and then Alice shows up and your like bad timing much?

forensic_fanatic's picture

I totally agree with you. A number of my friends were reading the books, so I thought that I'd give them a try. I barely made it through the first one. I could suspend belief for A LOT of the stuff in the books (especially involving the vampire lore) but I could not handle the abusive relationship between Edward and Bella. I know it's supposed to come off as romantic, but to me, it came across as a suffocating and unhealthy relationship.

MAND44's picture

If you ask me, this movie is a joke. I know it passed like 3-4 years since it's realease, but two movies that came after the first one were even worse. But, the movie striked well with it's plot : 'I will write a book about guy who wants to do anything for the girl he likes, and he will be a vampire, he will sparkle, and he won't want to hurt any human being' - all the teenage girl and those less-fortunate women of little bit older age will fall for it. They did. Even tho movie has like 4.5 rating at IMDB, I think movie deserves at least 2 - even that's too much. Dialoge, character development, acting, whole enviroment and goofy story - it all makes this movie a joke. If you ever watched so called 'The Hollywood Movie' which is basicaly girls walking around naked or almost naked for 1h30m (probably you didn't, but whatever), I think it's better. Not because of the naked girls, but because of the fact that writers didn't have anything smart to write, so they didn't. It's a pure pleasure for eyes and it's not pain for ears. Twilight is, unfortunately, pain for eyes, ears, legs, mind, heart and all the things human body owns.
