You have to laugh at the plots and character roles that they keep coming up with for Will Ferrell. Right when I think Hollywood has exhausted the list, they figure out another insane story for him. Unfortunately there's not much too laugh at during his latest movie, Semi-Pro.
Will Ferrell plays coach, player, and owner of the Flint Michigan Tropics, an ABA team trying to get to 4th place and win a spot in the NBA. Most of the humor comes from the insane promotions they put on to get at least 2,000 fans in the audience for their games.
Sadly the movie just falls flat and even feels poorly produced. There's not much to care about with the characters and the one semi-love story is kind of weak and disgusting. While a Ferrell movie always contains its share of sight gags, the ones in this film just seemed tired and overdone. The only scene worth watching is when the characters unknowingly play a game of Russian roulette.
One of my biggest problems with the movie was its need to be rated R. Cut out a little language and maybe tone down one scene and this movie did not need a restricted rating. It almost feels bizarre that they made that decision, especially since the film in no way competes with the writing of other far raunchier but infinitely more clever comedies.
The Tropics are told that even if they get into 4th place they won't be allowed to play in the NBA. They decide to go for it anyway and beat the number one team in what Will Ferrell's character calls the "Mega Bowl." It's amusing solely because all the team speeches are about achieving "4th place."
If Will Ferrell wasn't in this movie it would completely flop. Truthfully, even he couldn't save this one. I give it 2 out of 5.
