The Break-Up

Jennifer Anniston and Vince Vaughn star in this convincing movie about the dynamics of men and women and what happens when a couple finally calls it quits.

Both actors did an extraordinary job of portraying an average couple that anyone could relate to.  At first I might find it unrealistic that someone like Brooke (Anniston) would fall for someone like Gary (Vaughn).  But since the real life actors are an item, I suppose it’s not all that unbelievable.  And as a credit to Vaughn, who I normally do not find attractive, he has a seriously sexy wink (wait for it).

While nothing was profoundly original in this film it did offer something different.  Recently romantic comedies have been over the top, and while that does make you laugh, it doesn’t really make you connect.  I really felt like both of these characters developed throughout the movie and made plenty of destructive, but realistic, decisions.  I did laugh, but if you go to this movie expecting 40 Year Old Virgin humor, you will be very disappointed.

 So How Does It End?

This movie ends very differently than you might expect.  Basically, in the line with every movie of this genre, Gary realizes his faults and finally tries to make amends with Brooke.  But instead of her accepting his apology, she tells him she really has nothing left to give.  It’s very bittersweet and effective because you really want to see them together.  After all, while this movie might be labeled a romantic comedy, it’s also called “the break-up,” not the “get back together.”

The movie does give you a little closure as you see both characters are successful and independent.  They share a very realistic run-in and the audience is left with a little hope that they might be reunited someday.

I give it a very strong three out of five, seriously bordering on four.  I realize the critics are trashing this movie, but I happen to really enjoy an unconventional romantic comedy that I thought was very unique and real at the same time.
