Finally, after 18 years on television, The Simpsons come to the big screen. Could they successfully go from 22 minutes to 87 minutes? Absolutely…and with huge laughs.
The movie had the time to allow every character to have a story, and each was important to the overall plot. The writing is excellent as we explore Homer’s selfishness, Bart’s relationship with his father, and Lisa’s activism. Even Marge and Maggie have small important roles that move the story forward. I hate to get more specific about the plot because part of the charm of a Simpsons’ production is the wacky plotlines.
The opening to the animation is very clever and funny and even FOX gets in a few jokes throughout the film. The color and animation look fantastic on the big screen as well. Truly, as a huge Simpsons fan, I couldn’t be more pleased with this film, and it was really amazing to sit in such an eclectic audience of people. These cartoon characters have been around a long time and have quite a broad following.
Well, after many twists and even one of Homer’s famous bizarre hallucinating dreams, Springfield is saved from extinction. Homer and Bart have a great moment together and Lisa hooks up with a cute little Irish boy that cares about the environment as much as she does. Oh, and stayed tuned during the credits, because Maggie says her first word!
This was a great transition to the big screen and really, really funny. No, it’s not the greatest movie of all time, but it was a perfect Simpsons movie. I give it 5 out of 5.
