Transformers

It’s finally time to review the much anticipated blockbuster Transformers directed by the infamous Michael Bay.  A little background on me first…I watched transformers on occasion as a kid but I’m pretty sure I never saw the animated movie (although I own it now for my son thanks to Daniel).  Although I owned an Optimus Prime in my younger years, I didn’t know his name.  Yes, proceed with your rock throwing.  I only recently learned the importance of these autobots through friends.

That said, I was pretty excited about this movie.  How could I not be working for HISHE?!  The film takes place in modern day as the decepticons seek a special cube, the allspark, that has landed on earth and will help them transform everything into evil so that they can rule again.  Prime and his crew intend to get to it first and save the human race.  I expected a lot of cheese, not only because of the premise, but because of the director.  What I got was a fairly well told story with a lot of heart and some pretty decent humor too.

That’s not to say this movie lacked in cheese.  First of all, the young girls in this film are RIDICULOUS.  The guys are normal, even a bit nerdy, and the girls are smoking hot geniuses.

Rachael Taylor's, the blonde, storyline is fairly worthless and only serves to provide the ever famous “control room” scenes for Michael Bay.  Some of the lines are also silly, but that is somewhat expected in a summer blockbuster based on a kids cartoon.  The worst line was definitely Megatron’s introduction of himself to the audience.

Kudos to Shia Lebeouf though who plays Sam (“Spike” – although he was never called Spike in the movie).  This kid is amazing.  He has some of the best timing and delivery I’ve ever seen.  The action was nothing short of spectacular.  From the transforming, to the choreographed fight scenes, it was unbelievably impressive, almost overwhelming.  Finally, I don’t know if it was because of who I saw the movie with, but when Optimus Prime introduces himself to Sam for the first time and the whole audience clapped, I got chills!

So How Does It End?

Remember, I ruin things here, so stop reading if you don’t want them ruined.  The ending is wrapped up a little too quickly and is the biggest weakness of the movie.  Megatron is killed by the cube…apparently all Sam had to do was hold it up under him and it would be absorbed into his chest leaving him dead.  It seemed a little too convenient and quick to me.  Also, poor Jazz is killed and his death scene happens so quickly that you almost forget until Prime reminds us at the end.  The dead decepticons were thrown into the ocean and the good guys live amongst us as protection.  In other words, there is plenty of room for a sequel.

I really enjoyed this movie and although it has its flaws, believe it is definitely the best blockbuster in a long time.  It is hands down Michael Bay’s best film.  I give it 4 out of 5.
