Get Smart is funny and full of heart, but not without flaws. The film did a fantastic job of keeping the spirit of the old show but unfortunately spoiled almost all of the laughs in the trailers.
Steve Carell is perfectly cast as Maxwell Smart and brings all of his usual charm and comedic timing. The rest of the cast did a great job as well, but the stand out was definitely Alan Arkin with his impeccable delivery as The Chief. The plot for Get Smart follows the usual spy movie lines and injects enough seriousness with its ridiculousness that it somehow works. While some of the gags flop, there are plenty that work...and even a few you haven't seen in the previews a hundred times.
Although a minor issue, I would love for the presidential gags to stop. And not because I don't agree, but because when I see a movie, I don't want to be reminded of reality. In the movies, I want my president to know how to pronounce “nuclear.” And isn't that joke at least 6 years old now? Come on.
Max is accused of being a double agent but proves his innocence and saves the day. In an absurd action sequence involving a speeding car, a train, and a plane, Max misses death “by that much.” He hooks up with agent 99 (Hathaway), which I will admit didn't work for me because I don't think the movie did a great job of building their relationship romantically for me. Or maybe I just didn't feel any romantic chemistry between the Carell and Hathaway.
I also have to say that I love Patrick Warburton and thought his cameo at the end was hilarious.
