Don’t make the mistake I did by seeing this movie with your mom, but if you want to laugh so hard you cry, then run to the theaters to see this movie! Steve Carell has officially earned the title of the funniest man on television and on the big screen. After stealing scenes from the likes of Will Farrell and Jim Carrey, he finally gets to play the lead, and hilariously owns every minute of it.
Now before I whole-heartedly recommend this movie, please be warned that it is unabashedly raunchy. You could watch this movie alone and still be embarrassed by some of the dialogue. Fortunately it was countered well by Steve Carell’s character Andy who, like the audience, seemed equally ashamed. His sweet innocence gave you something to root for, and made a hilarious contrast to the other males in the movie.
The comedic timing of this movie was fantastic, not only from Carell, but also from an excellent supporting cast. If you enjoyed the chemistry of Anchorman, most of those actors return for this movie as well. My only complaint is the tired routine of Jane Lynch, who plays Andy’s boss at the stereo store. Unfortunately this actress seems to be boxed into the same character in every comedy. I get it; she likes to make other characters uncomfortable as she awkwardly talks about sex. After Best In Show, Mighty Wind, and now this movie, its just not funny anymore.
Despite all it nastiness, this movie actually has a good message. The obvious premise of the movie is that all of Andy’s friends are trying to help him get laid. The reality of the movie is that each of them learn something valuable from Andy’s chastity. I give it 4 out of 5.
